What parents need to know

Positive messages

The message here is to have fun competing in over-the-top races.

Positive role models

The game includes a huge lineup of characters from a range of  games aimed at younger audiences and all are benign in their roles here.

Ease of play

The controls, consisting of accelerate, steer, and "drift" are simple and fluid.

Violence

During races, players collect power-ups, some of which allow them to fire missles, run opponents off the track, hit them with giant hammers, etc. This creates funny chaos and no one is hurt.

Sex

One character, Oolala, from the game Space Channel 5, wiggles her hips suggestively and wears a mini skirt.

Consumerism

All the characters appear in other game franchises, so this title is a form of cross-promotion.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing contains cartoony violence that falls into the comic mischief category. Players jostle each other while on the track, and flatten one another with over-sized hammers and giant eggs, although no one is ever hurt. Play is suitable for all ages, but the game has an option for unsupervised online chat during play on Xbox and PS3. a feature that Common Sense Media does not advise for kids under 12.

What's it about?

There's little not to love in SONIC & SEGA ALL-STARS RACING game. It is a fast, frenzied racing game on colorful and extremely varied tracks. Players can play as Sonic or one of 19 other SEGA characters such as Super Monkey Ball's AiAi, Amigo chimp, or brawlers from the Virtua Fighter series. Or, drivers can race with their custom Mii or Xbox Live avatars. In any event, they'll have a unique car, truck, or motorcycle and compete in either split screen multiplayer, online racing, or single player games. The simple objective is to reach the finish line first, even if it means knocking opponents aside using power-ups and weapons found along the way.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

This is an extremely fun game, especially played in a group. The controls are tight and really responsive. The tracks are well designed, with lots of imaginative short-cuts and colorful themes. Lastly, the characters are so varied - from the realistic to the cartoony - that there's something for everyone. This  whimsical, well-designed game makes for a terrific family activity.

Online interaction: Players can go online on Xbox Live and PS3 and engage in unmoderated voice chat during games.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about their favorite characters. One of the most fun aspects to the game is trying out the different characters and seeing their vehicles and unique moves and skills. What games do the other characters appear in?

  • Also worth discussing is how different this game is from other kart racing titles. How does it compare to Mario Kart games?

Sonic racing done right

While I do find the idea of someone who hates this game giving it a perfect score anyway strange, that's not the point of this review. Anyway, when it comes to racing and Sonic, the results have not been all that great. Sonic R, Riders and Drift were all mediocre at best, Riders mostly suffering from a system that was quite difficult to figure out for the first day or so. However, the Sega All-Stars games have at least done a good job so far and this is no exception. It's easy to figure out and just plain fun, using many elements from Mario Kart while also adding the wonder simply known as special attacks, plus everyone has a different vehicle, no one actually using a go-kart, hence this isn't a Mario Kart ripoff. I have the DS version, so of course I don't have all the bonus characters that the other versions added, but nonetheless, it's still very enjoyable and the first truly great Sonic racing game.

Exciting game

It was great! So fun! Minor cartoon violence was all there was. Nothing you don't see in other similar racing games. Great to play with the whole family.
