Positive messages

Depending on which of the games is played, the themes change from rescuing small birds to destroying elves and shooting down helicopters.

Violence

As is typical with classic titles, violence was handled differently than it is now. Enemies split into multiple parts with no blood, or simply just vanish from the screen in a flash. The violence varies from ninja action of Shinobi III and fighting titles like Streets of Rage to Sonic the Hedgehog and his devastating jumping ability.

Sex

Some games such as the three Golden Axe titles feature scantily clad female characters, but the blocky graphics don't have the same impact as today's titles.

Language
Not applicable
Consumerism

The classic games rarely featured real world advertisements, but the collection does contain games that have spawned television shows, as well as even more video games.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Some titles feature bottles which look like alcohol and potions.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this is a game collection with over forty classic titles from the early and mid 1990s. Along with the Sega Genesis games, unlockable Sega Master System and arcade titles are also included aiding in the nostalgia. The game selection varies from kid friendly titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Ecco the Dolphin, to more adult oriented titles like Altered Beast and E-SWAT. Some titles may feature female characters in less than modest clothing, but the blocky graphics hide that issue.

What's it about?

SONIC'S ULTIMATE GENESIS COLLECTION takes a slice of gaming history and presents it for new gamers and people who enjoyed this titles fifteen years ago. Sega has gathered over forty classic titles from the Sega Genesis system and a small selection of their arcade and Sega Master System titles, added a new coat of polish and made them ready for today's high definition television sets. With such a massive collection of excellent titles to choose from, Sega covered a variety of genres to appease all gamers. Role playing games are covered with not one, but four complete Phantasy Star titles, in addition to the Shining Force series and Beyond Oasis. Platform gamers will enjoy gems like Flicky and the Sonic series, and action fans are sure to be thrilled with three Streets of Rage titles plus two versions of Altered Beast.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Unlike some other older game collections that tend to get pushed out the door with minimal updates, the games in this collection run as smooth on the PS3 and the X360 systems as they did 15 years ago, even down to the choppy graphics when too much happens onscreen. In order to update things to today's graphical standard, each title comes with an option to turn on a smoothing filter that actually works very well and makes looking at these normally choppy graphics quite easy on the eyes without drastically changing the retro appeal.

Without a doubt this collection is one of the best values for the dollar when it comes to retro gaming. Plus, you get developer interviews and the ability to save a game so you can come back to it later. The sheer number and variety of games will not disappoint anyone who has an interest in this era of video games, either for nostalgia purposes or to help introduce the younger generation to games that Mom and Dad might have played.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about what games were like when parents were younger. Did they seem much easier or much more difficult than the games that are played at home today? Do the characters such as Alex Kidd still hold any relevance to the current generation? Do games which were viewed as exceptional titles then still hold the same entertainment value today?
