New version of classic board game adds a fun twist.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

With the modified rules in this version of Trivial Pursuit, players compete more aggressively against one another than in the traditional board game. Nevertheless, it is still in the spirit of fun, healthy competition. In addition, the game encourages learning through the thousands of trivia questions.

Positive role models

There are no characters or role model figures in this game other than you.

Ease of play

The level of difficulty among the myriad questions in this game is highly varied. Some require only the most peripheral knowledge of pop culture while others focus on very specific academic subjects that only scholars and trivia buffs will be able to answer. Every question is presented in multiple-choice format, so it's easy to guess.

Violence

Sex

All questions are presented in a neutral, historical context but there are a few that contain sexual content -- for example, one question asks players which hairstyle was "considered a symbol of sexual freedom," while another asks, "Which star of Sex and the City never appeared nude in the show?"

Consumerism

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

A very small number of questions in this game contain specific references to drugs -- "What Heisman Trophy winner switched from marijuana to meditation, which he says provides him with the same 'feeling of being free'?" and "What is the name of the 1988 film about a cocaine-addicted real-estate salesman that stars an actor who would go on to play Batman?"

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Trivial Pursuit: Bet You Know It lets players compete in a traditional version of the Trivial Pursuit board game as well as a new, more rapid-fire version in which all players get a chance to answer every question. Players 'bet' on whether or not they know the answer, and whether or not their opponents know. These betting sequences include pictures of poker chips, which enhances the sense of gambling even though this is far from a Las Vegas-style competition. This mode of gameplay is a bit more cutthroat and focuses as much on strategy and cunning as it does on knowledge of trivia. Between the two game modes there are thousands of questions, a very slim number of which include references to drugs (cocaine and marijuana), sex, and nudity.

What's it about?

TRIVIAL PURSUIT: BET YOU KNOW IT is based on the board game of the same name. This version breathes new life into the classic trivia game. It is meant to liven and speed up the competition by allowing everyone a shot at answering every question that appears. This video game also includes a mode of play that offers traditional Trivia Pursuit gameplay without the \"Bet You Know It\" rules. It supports up to four players using four Wii remotes.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Trivial Pursuit: Bet You Know It is successful in opening up a new form of gameplay for the classic, decades-old trivia game staple. It adds a new layer of strategy as it requires players to size up everyone in the room and guess who knows what. It provides a much more fun, party-like experience as opposed to the intense cerebral challenge associated with this franchise; though the level of difficulty in the trivia questions themselves is on par with what Trivial Pursuit aficionados should expect.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about why it is important to know subjects like history, science, and geography. Where else might this knowledge be helpful?

  • What part of this game is more entertaining -- betting on who knows the question, or trying to answer the question yourself?

  • Do you prefer playing board games on a gaming console or around a kitchen table? Why?

Good learning game for older kids.

This game is a good family game (unless your dad is like mine and knows these answers like the back of his hand). There is nothing bad in this but smaller kids may not have had enough experience for this game yet.
