Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party

Dress-up game has both teamwork and unrealistic bodies.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

The game teaches the importance of teamwork as characters work together to throw seasonal parties by all chipping in to complete their respective tasks.

Positive role models

The girls in the Winx Club are nice and supportive. Other characters try to thwart the parties by causing mischief. However, these characters all have unrealistic supermodel bodies, with very little diversity in appearance.

Ease of play

Mini-games are played by tapping the stylus on the screen. Players are awarded a star-rating based on performance, but there are no consequences for losing.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party is a mini-game collection featuring the setting and characters from Nickelodeon’s Winx Club TV show. Aimed at tween girls, the game contains positive messages about teamwork but features characters with impossibly thin supermodel figures who can be dressed in skimpy midriff-showing outfits.

What's it about?

Players customize a female fairy avatar by selecting hairstyle, skin color, and outfit, and enroll as the newest student at the Alfea School for Fairies. Gameplay is limited to helping members of the Winx Club plan themed school parties (such as Halloween and Spring) by playing six mini-games: coloring posters, decorating cakes, mixing punch, making fireworks, choosing music, and decorating centerpieces. By completing mini-games, players unlock new items, clothing, and accessories.

Is it any good?

Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party is a fun dress-up game for tween girls, with hundreds of outfits and accessories to adorn a fairy character. However, the storytelling is weak, and the mini-games become repetitive since they don’t scale to greater difficulty. Story mode can be completed in about half an hour, leaving nothing else to do but replay the minigames to unlock more stuff. Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party gets the dress-up part right, but seems like a missed opportunity in other areas that could have done more to exploit the popular Winx Club franchise.
