Upcoming horror adventure has deceptively scary gameplay.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that World of Horror is an upcoming horror role-playing game (RPG) available for download on Windows PCs. The game's currently in Early Access on Steam, meaning that sections or plot elements could change between now and its final release. The story's one that's influenced and controlled by a lot of horror tropes and styles found in books and movies. Set in the small coastal town of Shiokawa, Japan, events seem to play out right from the pages of an H.P. Lovecraft novel. Robed figures seem to gather in locations, creatures roam the land, and people mysteriously disappear. Players will select from one of five different characters as they attempt to survive the treacherous situations in a mysterious town. As they choose different actions on their way through the town, such as exploring a location or discovering clues, they'll unlock new dialogue choices or abilities they can perform. At times, players will be able to learn spells and rituals to attack monsters both in this world and in alternate dimensions. There's lots of creepy and scary imagery to be found in the game, as well as gruesome monsters, body horror imagery, and nightmarish visuals. But some of the impact is removed by the fact that the color palette is reduced to only two colors, which forces players to use their imagination to fill in some details. There's some scenes where characters are shown in bathtubs or bathing houses. There are also moments where characters use cigarettes.
