Yumi's Odd Odyssey

Surreal, unforgiving platfomer may frustrate young players.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

There's no explanation for why Yumi has embarked on her surreal adventure. The message is neither positive nor negative.

Positive role models

Neither Yumi nor the strange creatures she encounters display any emotions or personality, so they couldn't really be considered role models.

Yumi dispatches enemies by stunning them with her lure, then touching them to make them disappear. There's no blood or gore. If Yumi touches an enemy or falls into the water, she simply restarts the level.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Yumi's Odd Odyssey is a puzzle platformer set in a surreal world. Yumi, a schoolgirl journeying through a strange land filled with human-legged fish and other weird creatures. She encounters enemies and bosses, which she battles by stunning them with her fishing lure, but the emphasis is mostly on running and jumping rather than fighting. The game's high difficulty will frustrate younger players -- the puzzles are hard enough to challenge seasoned adult players.

Engagement, Approach, Support

Simple controls betray a high degree of difficulty that hampers enjoyment and slows progress. The game's personality is…well…odd, and lacks the mainstream appeal of other platformers.

Learning Approach

Kids learn perseverance as they will likely have to replay levels many times to master them. The learning environment discourages risk-taking, as players are harshly penalized for mistakes.

In-game bubbles introduce new controls and obstacles. Beyond that, players receive no support if they get stuck.

Emotional Development

  • persevering

Kids can learn a bit about strategy and perseverance in this platforming arcade game. They'll figure out how to navigate various obstacles using simple controls and physics using trial and error. While Yumi's Odd Odyssey does teach some physics and problem-solving, it doesn't provide a very supportive environment for learning.

What's it about?

In YUMI'S ODD ODYSSEY, a schoolgirl named Yumi must navigate through a series of platform-based obstacles using only the ability to run, jump, and cast her fishing lure, which she can use to latch onto objects, swing, rappel, and pull herself forward. She'll have to steer clear of environmental hazards like icy walls, pools of water, and freaky-looking fish with human legs, in order to reach the door that takes her to the next level. Players' scores are ranked on a global leaderboard.

Is it any good?

Yumi's Odd Odyssey's controls are simple to learn but tricky to master, and the levels are very unforgiving of mistakes and don't leave much room for experimentation. If you misjudge a jump or otherwise cause Yumi's demise, you'll have to restart the level from the very beginning. Argh! The game also keeps a tally of how many times you've failed the level, which is the opposite of motivating. Yumi's Odd Odyssey is for serious platform game fans who don't mind a hefty challenge.
