2017 Brings New Challenges for America’s Children and Families
Working for solutions in Washington, D.C. that will help all kids, and standing up against changes that pose them real harm.
If the new Congress and administration in Washington follow through on many of their policy promises, America's children have a lot to lose.
The threat to kids is very real: Whether its early childhood services, health care, child nutrition, equitable access to technology in the classroom and at home, or many other issues, children are certain to lose if the proposed policies are enacted.
Common Sense Kids Action is committed to doing everything possible to oppose policy changes that will hurt children, and we will work equally hard to support bipartisan policies that help make kids America's top priority. Earlier this month, we wrote to the Senate committee responsible for confirming the Trump Administration's nomination of Betsy DeVos as secretary of education, raising important concerns about educational opportunities for all kids.
While the list of threats to kids is long, here are two of the issues we're working on that are particularly dangerous:
Children's Health Care
The president-elect and majority in Congress have already started the process of repealing the Affordable Care Act, with nothing to replace it. While not perfect, this historic health law is responsible for helping 20 million Americans get health insurance who didn't have it before, including millions of children. Experts say that repealing the ACA will result in "4.4 million children and 7.6 million parents losing coverage in 2019 without a replacement plan."
Child Nutrition
The new administration and the new Congress plan to get rid of as many federal regulations as they can, and in the process they could undo years of progress in children's health and nutrition. Three things in particular could be on the chopping block:
- the improved federal school meals program;
- the calorie labels required on most restaurant menus;
- and upcoming improved nutrition label requirements.
You can count on Kids Action to defend kids, and you can count on us to keep you informed of what the upcoming policy changes mean. We hope that we can count on you, too -- join us in stopping harmful policies and supporting commonsense policies that will finally make kids America's top priority. Let's work together for all kids right now.
