Look Who's Supporting Federal Student Privacy Legislation Now!
A bipartisan bill in Congress to help keep our students' personal data private and secure got a big boost this week when a broad coalition of top consumer, privacy, and kids' advocacy groups joined together to urge a key committee to move ahead on this important measure.
Student privacy and protection has always been a top priority for Common Sense Kids Action. And we've been working hard to build a coalition with our partners in this emerging field. Together, we wrote to the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee urging them to hold a hearing right away on this bill that would really help kids and their parents better manage life in the digital age.
The support of these leading organizations is key. Besides Kids Action and the Center for Democracy & Technology, well-known supporters now include Consumers Union, the Consumer Federation of America, and Electronic Frontier Foundation, among others. The bill also is supported by a large number of education organizations.
Introduced by Reps. Luke Messer (R-Indiana) and Jared Polis (D-Colorado), this bill would set sensible and enforceable rules for K–12 websites, online services, and apps to protect the privacy and security of students' personal information. Using technology in schools can boost our children's educational opportunities, and it can be done in a safe way. A congressional hearing is the next step we need to help advance this important issue.
