25 Ways Your Voice Made a Difference for California Kids
With hundreds of calls and emails to policymakers, "For Kids" advocates like you made your voices heard loud and clear in Sacramento this year. And now that Gov. Brown has dotted the i's and crossed the t's on which bills will become law, it's time to reflect on what we've achieved.
We've had some big wins this year! Together, the legislature and Gov. Brown passed and signed 25 "For Kids" bills that will help make California a better place for our kids and families. On topics as wide ranging as providing free menstrual supplies for students to establishing a task force to tackle our state's child poverty rate, California has moved the needle for our kids.
We at Common Sense Kids Action are excited to highlight four bills in particular that will make a big impact for California's children. From ending school lunch shaming to making it easier for new parents to take time to bond with their kids, these bills will move us closer to a California in which every child and family has what they need to thrive.
Supporting Paid Family Leave: SB 63
SB 63 will help families by providing three months of job-protected maternity and paternity leave for almost all California employees.
Protecting California's Immigrant Families: SB 54
SB 54 will ensure that every child, no matter their immigration status, feels safe when they walk into their classroom, ask a police officer for help, or visit their doctor for a checkup and that every parent can seek medical care for their family and pick up their child from school without fear.
Expanding Screenings for Children Affected by Trauma: AB 340
AB 340 will expand California's infant and child early-screening program to identify children who are victims of trauma to provide them with the mental health care services that would help them thrive.
Ending School Lunch Shaming in California: SB 250
SB 250 will ban practices that shame students with school meal debt so that every student is well-nourished and well-educated in the kind of welcoming, supportive environment that will help them thrive.
None of this would be possible without the efforts of passionate, dedicated advocates like you. Your voices made the difference for kids this year, and we look forward to teaming up with you for more "For Kids" wins in the near future!
