How do I choose media that can positively impact my kid's body image?

Even little kids are affected by seeing the same stereotypes portrayed over and over again in media. When every princess and prince is thin and beautiful and every witch and warlock is fat and ugly, you can bet it makes a big impression. Being intentional about what you expose your kids to can help them develop positive body images. Here's what to look for:

  • Diverse characters of all shapes, sizes, and colors.
  • Gender-neutral stories with characters who aren't strongly identified as either male or female.
  • Characters whose success is based on effort and respect, not appearance.
  • Proportional bodies that deemphasize secondary sex characteristics (such as breasts and broad chests).
  • Both male and female characters who learn from each other and help each other.
  • Characters who overcome obstacles through hard work.
