Getaway has to be one of the most awkward, sloppily executed, edited, and acted action movies I’ve seen in a while. Sure, the first couple of minutes were really fun and suspenseful with a really good car chase sequence! Perhaps, it would’ve been better if Getaway was a one man show with Ethan Hawke trying to survive and save his wife. Actually, scratch that, based on most of the rest of the movie, it probably would’ve been just as messy. Then comes Selena Gomez. I do not have a problem with her. She could possibly be a nice person and she’s given pretty good performances in the past (Ramona and Beezus, Monte Carlo) but here her performance comes off as downright forced and awkward, not to mention her character is extremely irritating at first but becomes quite likable later. The rest of the movie we have to hear them argue with lots of really bad dialogue while later getting interrupted by some kind of cop car siren and a really bad jump cut to a chase. This routine (with a couple unintentionally hilarious close ups to Jon Voight’s eyes and mouth while drinking a coffee sprinkled in) goes on and on during the film and gets quite boring. And don’t even get me started on storytelling (if there was any). It makes no sense and the twist even gives you a bigger case of the WTF’s! Lets just say it attempts to be a Christmas movie. And the only two good car chases were the beginning one and the end one. But somehow, it’s not boring all the way through. Some of the dialogue (SOME) between Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez can be a little bit entertaining while the rest of it falls flat. I guess we began the summer with a great Christmas movie (Iron Man 3) then end it with a not so good one. Goodbye, summer 2013!
