Distasteful adaptation of classic novel

The movie features one long string of sexual encounters for the main character. Viewers may find themselves feeling prurient rather than as tasteful consumers of a film adaptation of classic literature.

Epic drags, but the romance doesn't!

As a Bardem fan, I knew I would eventually have to see this gorgeous looking period piece. Bardem's Florentino is a flawed man to be sure, compensating his broken heart for mostly meaningless affairs the movie depicts in nearly dull depictions, and he is a shadow as Mezzogiorno's character calls him, but sometimes love doesn't have to make sense. In fact, it rarely does. Director Mike Newell could have trimmed a lot of fat, but the result is a solid melodrama that calls back to the love-lorn pieces of yesteryear.
