"Superhero Movie" is a parody movie by Craig Mazin starring Drake Bell and Leslie Nielsen.
Since the release of the actually quite funny "Scary Movie", there was a huge amount of spoof movies in the last decades.
Some being rather good (e.g. "Not another Teen Movie"), some being really bad (e.g. "Disaster Movie"). However, none of them was at the level we know from top notch parodies such as "Hot Shots!" or "Spaceballs". What about this one here?
Firstly, "Superhero Movie" makes fun of comic book adaptions. The main plot is taken from Spider-Man and follows the adventures of Dragonfly (Drake Bell). Also, there are parodies of "X-Men", "Batman Begins" or "Fantastic Four". However, unlike some of the inferior versions released in the last decades, "Superhero Movie" does not simply copy the scenes from the original movies, but also adds some humorous puns and slapstick elements. Craig Mazin (writer of "Scary Movie 3", "The Hangover Part II") knows that references only are no fun, and instead adds a lot more gags and jokes to the scenes. Still, we're talking about a lowbrow level of humour. None of the jokes are clever or any satirical, and are pretty simple. There are fart jokes, sex jokes and jokes involving characters being hit with objects.
However, if not too sophisticated, you still have enough laughters for passing time. "Superhero Movie" is at the level of "Vampires Suck". Not the worst, but not good or memorable, either.
(Some jokes could be SPOILED:)
The movie has a high amount of sex jokes, but still at the PG-13 level.
Many (obviously fake) animals hump Rick when he accidentally spills a pheromone onto him (it looks fake and not too strong). Rick's uncle humps a corpse (also this is not too strong, they are both clothed). A character tries to stuff a corpse into a closet and when another character comes in, it looks like he would hump it. Many verbal references, too many to write them down, but they don't go beyond what is acceptable for a teenager. Drake smokes a water pipe, but uses vanilla ice instead of drugs. Verbal references to drugs, nothing glorifying. No bloody violence. Many corpses throughout the movie, as the villain has to absorb their life force. They simply look like old people then. During a ridiculously violent fight, a character slams several people's heads against walls, dustbins, etc. During this scene, he violently breaks a man's arm (we hear a very gruesome sound, but don't see anything explicit). A character sneezes another man's head off (no blood, no bloody stump, it looks very cartoon-like). A man coughs up blood. Some violence involves animals: An old woman and a dog get accidentally thrown into a wood chipper (no blood). A bird catches fire. A cat is stuffed into a turkey. Two bird get electroduced on an electric fence. Several shootings and other mild violence. Like with the sex, there is a huge amount, but still, nothing too strong. Everything is comical. One use of the f-word as well as some milder profanity.
This is an accurate PG-13, the only scene that could go beyond what is at MPAA standards is the scene, where several animals hump Rick. But still, it is fine for teens.
