Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Justin Bieber's single "Boyfriend" has a different, more mature sound compared with some of his previous tween-screamin' work, but the lyrics and content are still clean and totally appropriate for that age group -- assuming you're OK with your tween talking about boyfriends.

What's the story?

Justin Bieber might be singing to his long-time girlfriend Selena Gomez in his single, "BOYFRIEND," a different sound for JB that features some quiet, smooth rapping amid acoustic guitar, synthesized hand claps, and Bieber's always-impressive vocals. In it he sings about all the sweet and thoughtful things he would do if he were your boyfriend. Swoon.

Is it any good?

"Boyfriend" certainly possesses a new sound for the teen superstar, and the smooth, soft-spoken raps at the beginning make you question if he's for real. The lyrics are simple, almost laughable in a few places ("I could be your Buzz Lightyear, fly across the globe") but for tweens and young teens, he could be singing about Chef Boyardee and it would still be amazing. The single cover features a more mature, James Dean-looking JB that is very becoming, and he continues to impress with his effortless Usher-esque vocals while singing about all the ways he wants to be your boyfriend. It may not be his best song, but Bieber's confidence and talent always seems to pull him through.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about what makes someone a good friend, girlfriend, or boyfriend. What are some things that you do to show you're a good friend? What should you do if someone isn't treating you with respect?

  • Bieber has a different sound on this single; what do you think of it? Do you like it? Do you think it's necessary for artists to change up their sound to appeal to wider audiences? Or do you think JB is just having fun and trying new things? Do you think he succeeds?

  • JB sounds like the perfect guy on this single; is that realistic? Is any teenager capable of being such an ideal partner?

Where are the good clean christian values and morals for tweens? You shouldn't be dating until you're at least 24 years of age in this economy. BLAAH!!!!
