Dance-pop hit explores troubled love but keeps it clean.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

The song and video show two people in a chaotic relationship who can't resist being together, even if they aren't really sure they should be: "'Cause you are the piece of me I wish I didn't need/ Chasing relentlessly, still fight and I don't know why." While it's not the most positive message for kids, it's realistic and doesn't show anything too negative.

Positive role models

Unstable relationships aren't the best example for impressionable tweens and teens, but nothing violent or abusive is described.

Violence

The video shows a man finding blood on the ground after he crashes into the singer (metaphorically) with a car and while flying through the air. But the video doesn't show any actual violence.

Sex

The song features some lyrics that could be considered sexually suggestive, but are probably over the heads of most young kids: "Hold still right before we crash 'cause we both know how this ends/ A clock ticks till it breaks your glass and I drown in you again."

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that EDM producer Zedd has made a dance-pop hit with singer Foxes in the single "Clarity." While the song explores a somewhat dysfunctional relationship, there's no iffy language or references to drugs and alcohol and only a little innuendo, making this song OK for older tweens and up. The artistic video does show a smear of blood, the result of the singer and a man crashing into each other again and again. But the crashes are artistic and not overly violent, and are being used to illustrate how the two can't seem to end their chaotic relationship.

What's the story?

\"CLARITY\" brings together two very different artists: Producer Zedd, who's taken the EDM scene by storm, and Foxes, a talented British singer who's just making a name for herself on the music scene. The single explores how love can be toxic and miraculous at the same time with beautiful vocals (\"If our love is tragedy, why are you my remedy?/ If our love's insanity, why are you my clarity?) and chaotic beats. Its psychedelic video mixes scenic storytelling with frantic, surreal images of things crashing into each other.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

"Clarity" is a haunting track that beautifully expresses the chaos of relationships with its frenetic beats. The vocals are lovely, and the poetic lyrics will get in your head without being obnoxious. Fans of Skylar Grey will recognize her stamp on them. It's almost a perfect song, but what keeps it from greatness is its length. There are about two and a half minutes of a good song on this track, but it's unfortunately stretched out to four and a half. While those extra two minutes are probably an asset on the dance floor, for just listening it gets a little tired by the end.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the blend of genres in this song. Do you like the mix of the more melodic chorus and the EDM verses? Do you think they go well together?

  • Do you think the song and the video illustrate a realistic relationship? Why or why not?
