What's the story?

The popular Putumayo Kids label presents COWBOY PLAYGROUND, an auditory journey back to the American Wild West and a celebration of the simple life of a cowboy or cowpoke. With artists like Riders in the Sky, Johnny Bregar, Cowboy Envy, and Buck Howdy, the 12 tracks capture the spirit of cowboy life with songs like "Don't Fence Me In," "I'm an Old Cowhand," "Back in the Saddle Again," and "Happy Trails."

Is it any good?

Even if you aren't a fan of country, you can appreciate the country/folk songs on Cowboy Playground. Without being too twangy or preachy, songs like "Back in the Saddle," "Pecos Bill," and "It's the Cowboy's Life for Me" remind us of the ways of the West and capture the heart of the American tradition by conjuring images of heroes like John Wayne, Roy Rogers, and Dale Evans smiling in their cowboy hats and slurping beans from a tin cup. With the hustle and bustle of everyday life and technology increasingly playing a large role in our kids' lives, the songs on Cowboy Playground force us to slow down and enjoy the simple beauty that surrounds us.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about how our lives are consumed by technology. Think of all of the technology that you use from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed. What are some ways you can simplify your life on a daily basis?

  • Do you think you could spend a day, or even a week, without the comforts and chains of technology?

  • What do you think about the music and messages on this album? What are the songs trying to say? Which song is your favorite? What instruments do you hear?
