"Dirt Road Anthem" (CD Single)

Celebrates Southern culture but also driving with a beer.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

Some stereotypes about country life. Honoring Southern heritage and traditions is positive, but glorifying beer-drinking while driving is definitely not.

Positive role models

Drinking and driving is never acceptable, even if it's on a dirt road.

George Jones, Marlboro Man, "Jack" as in Jack Daniels, and "Jim" as in Jim Beam.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Mentions "friends" "Jack" Daniels and "Jim" Beam, Marlboro Man, "smoke rollin' out the window," and "an ice cold beer sitting in the console."

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this song is a country anthem that celebrates what it means to wear a cowboy hat and tight jeans. Country fans will love how it paints a colorful picture of Southern life, but parents will not appreciate the description of driving “with an ice cold beer in the console,” and mentions of "hangin' with good friends Jack (Daniels) and Jim (Beam)." Dirt road or not, drinking and driving is never OK, and parents may want to remind kids about the consequences of such dangerous and irresponsible behavior.

What's the story?

On his third single from the platinum-selling album My Kinda Party, relative newcomer Jason Aldean celebrates and makes no apologies for the ways of a Southern man. "DIRT ROAD ANTHEM" was originally written and recorded by Colt Ford and Brantley Gilbert, but Aldean puts his own stamp on it and even tries his hand at something of an oxymoron: country rap.

Is it any good?

When it comes to country anthems, just mentioning beer, dirt roads, or George Jones will make it an easy fan favorite. This song touches on many aspects of country life, from cornbread and biscuits to partying in a cow pasture. It's too bad that driving "with a beer in the console" is included as part of this Southern image. The rap part of the single certainly adds an unexpected twist and picks up the slow tempo, but this tune is not destined to be a country classic.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the popularity of country music. What characteristics make a song fall into this genre? Is it the lyrics, content, or music?  Do you think artists play up certain characteristics in their music to sell more records?

  • This song celebrates the stereotypes of country and Southern folks. What are some of these stereotypes? Is it ever fair to label a whole group of people?

  • The song celebrates alcohol. What are the real-life consequences of drinking?

This is a great song for all ages. The "H" word is said once and there is references to drinking and smoking. It also says that people teach you to "Kiss and cuss and fight too." And to watch out for the cops so it isn't a good role model song but it's fine!!!!!

Awesome song, some iffy lyrics.

CSM needs to be more consistent with their ratings, I understand this song has drinking and smoking references, but I seen another song that is literally just about some girl shakin' her butt come up as a "fun, flirty, country tune" that is "clean" with "mild innuendo" and this song comes up as iffy for teens because it mentions alcohol and cigarettes. This song is really catchy and fun. Another great song by Jason Aldean!
