A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this music.

Positive Messages

The track is about rising above gossip and focusing on loved ones.

Positive Role Models & Representations

The song encourages listeners to ignore rumors that swirl around when new relationships form.

Mentions kissing and a "love shack."

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Describes a love interest as an "addiction" and alludes to her being like a drug: "Hey honey you could be my drug, you could be my new prescription / Too much could be an overdose."

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that "Everybody Talks" is a single about a guy who is taken with a girl and tries to get her to take him seriously -- despite all the gossip swirling around about them. The lyrics mention kissing and going to a "love shack"; it also describes the girl as being like a "drug" and "addiction." Otherwise, the language and allusions here are clean, making the track an OK pick for older tweens and teens.

What's the story?

The first single from the Neon Tree's second album, Picture Show, "EVERYBODY TALKS" is an anthem to everyone who has ever tried to get a relationship off the ground but has found that gossip gets in the way. The track was used in a 2012 Buick car commercial.

Is it any good?

Just a hint of punk can be heard in this mostly pop concoction, which sports a rapid-fire beat that you can't help but tap a toe to. Lively vocals from lead singer Glenn Tyler add to the upbeat tone.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about why some people engage in gossip, and the effects that hurtful or untrue rumors can have on others.

  • Is it ever OK to gossip? Why or why not?

  • What's the difference between news and gossip?
