What parents need to know

Positive messages

Although the single is about staying alive in the Hunger Games (where teenage tributes fight to the death on live TV), the overall message is about finding the strength to show those against you that "you've got something they don't."

Positive role models

The Hunger Games heroine, Katniss Everdeen, is certainly a positive role model because of her strength, courage, and heart. Taylor Swift is also a great role model as she is focused on her music, not partying.

Violence

Nothing graphic, but song is about staying alive in a competition where teens fight to the death and includes the lyrics "Keep your aim locked" and "playing soldiers just pretending, in backyards winning battles with wooden swords."

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "Eyes Open" is a Taylor Swift country-rock single from The Hunger Games movie, and it's about staying alive in a world-televised event where young people must fight to the death. That being said, there is no explicit violence in the lyrics, so it's OK for tweens. There is a positive message of finding the strength to be your best and shine.

What's the story?

Pop-country sweetheart and songstress Taylor Swift sings "EYES OPEN," a single from Songs from District 12 and Beyond, the soundtrack to The Hunger Games, the movie adaptation of the bestselling Suzanne Collins novel. The country-rock track is about staying alive in the games, but also finding the strength to be your best and shine.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Swift's youthful vocals are a good fit for this bittersweet single about trying to stay alive and be yourself while the whole world is watching. Everyone feels like an underdog at some point, so even kids who aren't fighting for their lives will relate to this haunting and inspiring track. The Hunger Games heroine shows what it takes to come out on top, and this song is a worthy anthem to her strength, despite all the odds not being "ever in her favor."

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the hype surrounding The Hunger Games and what you think makes the book and movie so successful. Does it say something about our society that a book about teens fighting to the death is so popular, or is it more about the themes of hope, courage, and perseverance that resonate with fans?

  • The movie soundtrack boasts some big names like Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and Miranda Lambert. Does it make a soundtrack more appealing when popular artists sing on it? Are you likely to buy the soundtrack if you like a movie?

  • How does this song fit the mood of the Hunger Games movie? Does Taylor Swift's voice enhance the song's melancholy tone?

Taylor Swift, better keep you're beautiful blue Eyes Open

The song is really a great tune but a warning of violent lines as we all know it's from the hunger games and the lines are "Keep your aim locked" and "playing soldiers just pretending, in backyards winning battles with wooden swords." other than that no cursing
