Positive messages

Azalea is singing about how confident she is, but the message feels a bit more arrogant than empowering. The repeated references to alcohol and the entitlement she seems to feel for her decadent and indulgent lifestyle negates most of the song's positive messaging about self-confidence.

Positive role models

As a young female who quickly made a name for herself as a rising pop star -- and rapper -- it's easy to look up to Azalea's talent and drive. However, this track emphasizes her fondness for drinking, partying, and money.

Violence

Azalea refers to being in the "murda bizness" early in the song but doesn't go into detail about what that involves. Other violent connotations include a lyric about "slaying these hoes" and "gold trigger on the gun."

Sex

The song contains a few lines that can be interpreted as vague sexual references.

Language

There are uses of "f--k," "bitch," and the word "retarded" (the clean version removes those expletives.)

Consumerism

Money's a common theme, and a few alcohol brands are referenced ("Goose" for Grey Goose, "Cris" for Cristal).

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

There are plenty of mentions of alcohol and partying, including getting drunk on a mini-bus, spilling champagne, and drinking liquor.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Iggy Azalea's catchy single "Fancy (feat. Charli XCX)" has strong language and plenty of references to drinking. When she's not crooning about "takin' all the liquor straight" and getting drunk from a mini bar, Iggy Azalea (also known as Amethyst Amelia Kelly) projects an over-the-top sense of bravado, throwing out lines about the money she makes and how she's "got the whole world asking" how she does it. Language includes "f--k" and "bitch," as well as a use of "retarded"; there's an edited version  that removes the expletives. Generally, the song sounds a bit more self-important than offensive. Despite the party-centric lyrics, the song's accompanying video, a harmless take on the 1995 movie Clueless, doesn't show characters drinking.

What's the story?

FANCY, the No. 1 hit off Iggy Azalea's debut album, The New Classic, features the Australian rapper/former model singing about her career success and party-packed lifestyle. Poppy British alternative songstress Charli XCX provides additional vocals.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

"Fancy" is certainly infectious -- the catchy chorus almost drowns out the various verses of bling-y, livin'-it-up lyrics. However, there's an awful lot of emphasis on partying in the song; Azalea repeatedly mentions wild nights and drinks she's having. There's a clean version with the profanity edited out, but the song still has iffy messages for young kids.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can discuss drinking and why many of the lyrics in this song describe excessive behavior. Iggy Azalea is over 21, but some of the "Fancy" lyrics don't make it sound as if she's drinking responsibly. Identify some lyrics that imply she's not.

  • What's the difference between being self-confident and being self-centered? How can you talk about achievements you're proud of without suggesting you're better than other people?

  •

  • In the song, Azalea equates money with respect. What qualities or lifestyle choices earn your respect?

Great Pop Song But For People Who Can Handle Its Lyrics

Iggy Azalea's big hit Fancy is a great song overall but with some iffy stuff. The song has some language like "bitch, retarded, hoes, and f*ck. In one particular part of the song, Iggy says "Gold trigger on the gun" which could be too violent for small kids. There can be some alcoholic stuff like "Taking all the liquor straight" and'Let's get drunk on the minibar" This song is 13+ because of all its weird lyrics. I love this song though!

Great song but loads of iffy lyrics

The song is great but they issue is that it has a lot of strong swear words(the f word, the b word, and more). And there is a lot more alcohol filled lyrics then even swearing. So if you don't want your kids or tweens to copy what the lyrics are saying then get the clean version.
