Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Rebecca Black is a YouTube and Internet sensation. Although the song and video for "Friday" have received lots of criticism, the buzz around this young singer is certainly noteworthy. The squeaky-clean song and video -- about hanging out with friends on Friday night -- are fine for tweens, although the video does show the 13-year-old Black riding in a car with other kids who look too young to drive.

Parents say

What's the story?

Following in the steps of pop music super-sensation Justin Bieber, Rebecca Black has found overnight fame with her YouTube hit single, "FRIDAY," a song about the start of the weekend and the all-too-common dilemma of which, uh, seat to pick in the car. Released by a small, little-known vanity label, the song and video have received tens of millions of views on the Internet. Although the song has been universally criticized and parodied, 13-year-old Black has already been a guest on MTV, Good Morning America, and The Tonight Show.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

In case you weren't exactly sure where Friday fell in the week, "Friday" can clear that up for you. It's obvious that this song and video are low-budget, and the vocals and lyrics are annoying and repetitive. That said, Black is sweet, poised, and, above all, a very good sport about all the negative attacks on her singing and acting abilities. She didn't intend to be an Internet sensation, but at least she's enjoying it while she is. "Friday" may not be Grammy-bound, but it's certainly a catchy tune that kids will be singing with a smile at the end of the school week.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the fact that Black has gained so much popularity just via the Internet. With the success of other YouTube sensations, such as Justin Bieber, what do you think about the exposure that young kids can get online? Will it change the music industry?

  • There's been a lot of criticism toward Black and her song. Do you think it's justified? Do you think she's too young to be receiving so much attention and hurtful comments? Is it fair?

  • Anyone can be an Internet star these days. What are some ways to stay smart and safe when posting things online?

What is wrong with people these days?!?!

I feel so bad for Rebecca Black, because people are sending her death threats, and saying disgusting things about her. What is wrong with people these days? She's 13! Give her a break! Her voice isn't that bad either, it's just the song lyrics. I'm suprised and the parents reviewing this, they aren't sticking up for a another kid! I know my parents would. And I agree with ShawdowClan4ever! Who cares! It's not like your kids are going to be like "Ooooo! I want to be like her and not wear a seatbelt!" You have a brain for a reason people, now use them!

WHY DO YOU PEOPLE HATE HER? SHES FINE

Why do you people hate her so much??!?!!??! The song is actually pretty dang good. How would you like it if you made a song and everyone talked trash about you? No, you would be hurt to I bet you that! She just talks about having a great time with friends! NOT EVERY SONG HAS TO BE ABOUT LOVE, SEX, PARTYING, AND DRUGS!! If you think that is what music has to be about, GO SEE A COUNSELOR!!!! This song is good I like it. Don't hate me.
