Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this CD, part of the popular Wiggles lineup, is the first title in the "Wiggle and Learn" series, which features lessons on math, language, and health. This title, appropriately, is focused on health and physical fitness, as well as learning and literacy, though you wouldn't know that if Dorothy the Dinosaur (a recurring Wiggles character) didn't come on halfway and announce the topic change. There's a companion DVD, and it probably makes more sense to use them together, since on its own the CD, while fun in that classic Wiggles way, doesn't seem to impart much in the way of learning.

What's the story?

The wildly popular Aussie quartet is back with a new member and a new series of educational CDs and DVDs, with GETTING STRONG! as the debut album. It's also their first effort with Sam Moran, who recently replaced longtime member Greg Page. Catchy tunes like \"Smell Your Way Through the Day\" and \"Hello, We're the Wiggles\" make for pleasing kiddie music that adults won't mind (and might even enjoy).

Is it any good?

The 16 tracks on Getting Strong! make great background music for playtime or meals, but as an educational guide, the CD falls a little short -- partly because its raucousness makes it difficult to follow any "lessons." If it's educational value you're going for, you might want to pair the CD and DVD together, for context.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how being physical can be fun and why it's important to think about our health, even when we're kids. Different tracks feature favorite kid activities, like swinging on a swing and jumping rope -- kids, what are your favorite activities? Also, the second half of the CD has songs with foreign words. Can you identify which languages are represented by "hola" and "Yiasou" (Greek for "hello")?
