"Girl Gone Wild" (CD Single)

Dance-pop track is OK, but sexual video isn't for kids.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

Song is about being a "bad girl."

Positive role models

Yes, Madonna is all about empowerment and pushing the envelope, but at 53, grinding, kissing men, and talking about being a "bad girl" is getting kind of, well, old.

"Girls just want to have some fun, get fired up like a smoking gun." Video shows men holding guns and being a little too friendly with them.

The song itself just talks about being a "bad girl" and Madonna praying to God about wanting "so badly to be good." The video is very sexual and shows Madonna grinding the wall, being kissed, licked, and rubbed by several half-naked men (at once), and men kissing an apple at the same time very seductively.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Video shows Madonna and several men smoking sexily and blowing smoke rings.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that although "Girl Gone Wild" has clean language, it's about a bad girl who can't help herself. The video is very sexual, with half-naked men all over Madonna, kissing, grinding, and licking her. In the beginning of the video, Madonna prays to God to help her be a good girl so she won't go to hell, then a man with a crown of thorns appears. As she is getting kissed and fondled by many men, she says, "Forgive me." Parents should use their judgment with the video, which has been banned on YouTube for anyone under the age of 18.

What's the story?

Middle-aged superwoman Madonna continues to show that she's the original bad girl when it comes to making music and shocking the world with "GIRL GONE WILD," the second single from her 12th studio album, MDNA, about a bad girl who just can't be good. The controversial video was banned on YouTube for the 18 and under crowd due to its sexual content.

Is it any good?

When you see the video for "Girl Gone Wild,"  it's clear Madonna is pulling out all the stops: fabulous platinum Marilyn look, half-naked men in tights and stilettos, men making out with each other, Madonna, and an apple, Madonna grinding a wall and doing yoga, and oh yeah, a guy with a crown of thorns and Madonna praying to God to be a good girl. It's obvious she is desperate to prove that she can still shock and awe like the best of 'em. Granted, the single is a solid club beat, but as a song alone it's standard electro-pop for the dance floor. Now, put that together with the raunchy, sexy video and you got yourself something to talk about. Madonna has done it again.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how artists like Madonna and Lady Gaga like to push the envelope when it comes to their art. Do you think artists ever go too far? When? What can parents and kids do about it?

  • Do you think the hype surrounding controversial music helps or hurts the artist? How?

  • The video is extremely sexual. Even though it's been banned by YouTube for viewers under 18, chances are that kids will still see it. Talk to your kids about your family's views and values concerning about sex and relationships.

I love this song. I love the video. Sure it's not for kids under high school, but it's fabulous.

Clean song but an iffy message

Not a dirty song, but doesn't have a great message. While there are no swear words, the theme of the song is about a girl who's going bad, which could have to do with sex, but the song never actually makes any sexual mentions. It is best for tweens and up who at least understand what Madonna is singing about.
