"It Girl" (CD Single)

(i)

Mostly clean, cute tune talks of finding The One.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

Having love in your life is a good thing.

Positive role models

The singer seems devoted to the girl he loves.

Violence

Lightheartedly compares making a romantic commitment to jail time: “Give me 25 to life.”

Sex

A couple mildly sexy references like “if I get your body close, not letting go.”

Language

Appears to say "s--t" but it is actually just "shh."

Consumerism

Mentions Grammy.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

One reference to being “love drunk.”

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that “It Girl” doesn’t feature mature content beyond one reference to being “drunk” on love, and a tongue-in-cheek comparison of romantic commitments to jail time. Also, "shh" is used instead of the word "s--t." Primarily a tune about a guy who finally finds the right girl to love, the song is an acceptable choice for older tweens and teens.

What's the story?

Young R&B singer Jason Derulo talks about finding The One in “IT GIRL,” the second single from his album Future History. The tune is filled with lots of love-laced lyrics that describe his feelings for a special girl who has stolen his heart.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

In this tune, Derulo demonstrates that he can keep up with the best of the R&B pack, packing in a solid vocal performance. A beat based on whistling and clapping makes this cute, upbeat track all the more appealing.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about can talk about how artists like Jason Derulo can describe one of the most popular song topics of all time -- love -- in a unique way. Why is love such a popular theme in music?

  • Derulo alludes to jail time and being drunk in describing his feelings for a girl. How would you describe the way love makes you feel?

It girl...

I think this song is good for ppl 7 and up, only because this: My cousin nichole and I sometimes make barbie movies on youtube and she says she calls this clique in our movies "The It Girls." Plus we both play stardoll and she likes the shop it girls on stardoll. Plus she calls her group of friends the it girls. She is 8 and a half now. well, I think anyone ages 7-9 should look out for the sh*t word.
