"Live It Up (feat. Pitbull)" (CD Single)

Generic club anthem with some raunchy images, edgy video.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

JLo encourages everyone to "live it up," but judging by the music video, that means dance-floor seduction, lavish parties, and popping champagne.

Positive role models

Pitbull and JLo both spend a majority of the song bragging and using sexual innuendos, while the music video emphasizes fashion show glamour and writhing scantily-clad women.

Not applicable

While the lyrics shy away from explicit languages for the purposes of radio play, the song does feature several not-so-ambiguous phrases like "make love, don't fight, let's hook tonight," "I know you like my bumper," and "give you a hard night, so tight, ready to blow." The video is filled with provocative images of legs and bikinis.

JLo encourages the DJ to "Turn up this mutha."

Music video shows a close-up of a bottle of Beluga vodka.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

The lyrics are substance-free, but the music video is riddled with images of champagne bottles popping and a vodka bar at the beach.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this formulaic dance track is radio-clean but filled with lustful metaphors and raunchy images, as is typical of pop/house music these days. There's nothing too dirty, just references to things like "so tight, ready to blow," "rocking body to body," and the repeated phrase "let's hook tonight," which is presumably an abbreviation of "hook up." The video features images of champagne bottles popping and a vodka bar at the beach, as well as provocative images of legs and bikinis.

What's the story?

"LIVE IT UP" is the first single from Jennifer Lopez's forthcoming studio album, and her third collaboration in as many years with the inescapable Pitbull. Featuring a four-on-the-floor house beat and numerous breakdowns and "drops," the song is designed and primed to be a club smash, despite its lack of originality and forgettable lyrics.

Is it any good?

Kids who really like dance music may find the song serviceable, but there's nothing particularly exciting or fresh about this re-hashed party track. Pitbull's rap verse sounds like all of his other verses, and JLo's desperate attempt to stay relevant makes her seem like a wannabe Britney Spears or Nicki Minaj, but without any of the unique style or pizazz. You've heard this song many times before, and it wasn't even that fun the first time.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about partnerships in music. This is the third dance song Lopez and Pitbull have teamed up on. Why do you think these artists keep collaborating on similar material?

  • What do you think of the increasingly popular combination of house music and rap, which has been brought to the forefront of Top 40 radio by people like Pitbull and Flo Rida?

  • JLo started off in the R&B/Hip-hop realm, but appears to have switched to EDM (electronic dance music). What do you think of pop singers who have completely changed their style to adapt to the contemporary mainstream? Does it make them inauthentic? Why or why not?
