Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Coldplay's new single "Magic" is another harmless and simple song about the endurance of special bonds between two people, presumably lovers. The sentiment is sweet and the track is calm, so fans of the band will probably enjoy this low-key pop cut.

What's the story?

MAGIC is the first single from British rock outfit Coldplay's record Ghost Stories, the band's sixth studio album. It is the band's first new full-length since 2011's Mylo Xyloto.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Fans of the band know exactly what to expect from Coldplay, and that's becoming their biggest problem as artists. The lyrics of "Magic" are vague enough to be universal but too pedestrian to be profound. Musically, the song is pleasant and catchy, if a bit too familiar. When the bridge kicks in with spiraling pianos and Chris Martin's falsetto, it's almost comical how predictable the band has become. "Magic" isn't a bad song, and it's romantic enough, but it's nothing we haven't heard before.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about Coldplay's quiet dominance of the rock charts for more than a decade. What do you think has made their formula so successful?

  • Can a band still be considered "hip" or "cool" once it's conquered the mainstream? Is that important to you as a listener?

Nice beat, okay song

Like CSM said, "Magic" isn't really earth shattering, but it's a nice song, and the lyrics are positive about romantic love. I'm not a big Coldplay fan, though, so my review may be a little biased, anyway. There's absolutely no inappropriate content in it. It does mention love, but it's vague and contains no sexual references.
