"My Life" (CD Single)

Rap, pop titans team up in extremely violent track.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

There's nothing positive about these violent messages, which make it seem OK to take out intense frustrations on others.

Positive role models

No behaviors you would want your kids to emulate.

Some extremely graphic imagery, including "sharpening my machete" and "wrap your head up in plastic, p---y, now pick the casket."

A reference to oral sex.

Lots of profanity, from "f--k" to "p---y" to "c--k."
Not applicable
Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Suggests that enhancing a music track is like "lacing" a drug.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "My Life" is an intensely violent song that's filled with graphic imagery and language. Teens will be interested as it features three popular artists: 50 Cent, Eminem, and Adam Levine. The song uses killing and maiming metaphors to describe how these artists will crush their musical competition, and the lyrics are filled with words like "f--k" and "p---y."

What's the story?

Rap kingpins 50 Cent and Eminem join forces for "MY LIFE," the third single from 50 Cent's forthcoming fifth full-length album, Street King Immortal. Ubiquitous guest star Adam Levine, frontman for the pop group Maroon 5 and co-host of TV's The Voice, provides backing vocals for the track.

Is it any good?

All three of these artists have a knack for knowing what gets under listeners' skin, and each brings his best game to this slick tune. The result is an infectious track that's both mellow and intense at the same time. However, given its graphic language and violence, the track is best appreciated by older teens and up.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how to deal with intense emotions other than resorting to aggression. Which makes you feel better: losing your temper or talking through your feelings with a close family member or friend? Why?

  • What is the song's message? Is there any positive takeaway here?

  • Why do you think pop singer Adam Levine was included in this graphic rap single?

Nothing by 50 Cent is appropriate

Very few rappers have little or no profanity in their lyrics. 50 Cent is NOT one of those rappers.

Not As Violent As CSM Says. Lots Of Swearing though.

There's not much violence in this song, mostly metaphors to describe their careers. One line about how 2 other rappers can "suck a d**k". Get the clean version if your that worried.
