Safe but predictable song suffers from artificial sound.

A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this music.

Positive Messages

Gomez sings about being attracted to someone's genuine nature. "How you choose to express yourself, it's all your own and I can tell, it comes naturally"

Positive Role Models & Representations

By focusing on intangible qualities, Gomez takes attention away from the usual subjects of love songs: physical attractiveness and surface beauty. "You follow what you feel inside, it's intuitive, you don't have to try, it comes naturally."

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that there are no surprises to be found on this popular single. It's squeaky clean in the tradition of other Disney pop stars, with nondescript references like "when we collide sparks fly" that are hardly racy.

What's the story?

NATURALLY is the second single off of The Wizards of Waverly Place star Selena Gomez's debut album Kiss and Tell. It's a fast-paced electronic pop love song about infatuation and falling in love effortlessly. The song and album also feature Selena Gomez's band The Scene.

Is it any good?

It would be hard to pick out "Naturally" from the string of other fun-loving songs released by Disney teen stars over the past few years. The repetitive lyrics don't offer anything really imaginative, and the closest they come to creative thinking is the metaphor of comparing two lovers to thunder and lightening. With an upbeat high-energy flavor, the pop single isn't hard to listen to, but just stays too safe using an all too familiar formula.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about pop stars from the Disney Channel. What do they all have in common? Do they all share similar physical traits? How do these attributes make you feel about your own body image?

  • Talk about socially active celebrities. Selena Gomez recently posted videos urging viewers to contribute to organizations helping in the rescue efforts in Haiti. Does seeing a favorite star contribute to a good cause make you want to help as well?

  • Discuss the difference between flirtatious lyrics and inappropriate content. Where does your family draw the line? Are there certain songs that you know will be okay and others that you know you shouldn't listen to? Can you sometimes predict a song's content by the artist who's singing it?
