Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "Not Over You" is a pretty straightforward and wholesome song about a guy who's missing his estranged girl. Aside from a couple of instances of the word "damn," the track contains no mature content or hardcore profanity -- making it an OK pick for younger tweens and teens.

What's the story?

Pop singer Gavin DeGraw pines over his lost love in "NOT OVER YOU," the first single from his fourth full-length album, Sweeter. Written in collaboration with his friend and fellow musician Ryan Tedder -- lead singer of the group One Republic -- this song focuses on a guy who's not quite over his old girlfriend.

Is it any good?

Though Gavin DeGraw doesn't pack the same vocal punch as some of his peers, his songs, like this one, have a catchy pop quality that keeps you tuned in. With a piano-based approach that's reminiscent of The Fray, this track is appealing enough to get its fair share of radio play.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about Gavin DeGraw's clean approach to both his professional and personal lives and how that may have benefited his career.

  • Do you think DeGraw would have been asked to contribute his music to extremely popular shows like One Tree Hill and American Idol if his lyrics were more mature? Why or why not?

  • What lessons can other artists learn from DeGraw as they attempt to rise in the musical ranks?
