Positive messages

Subtle message of stepping up in spite of difficulty and standing up for your beliefs: "I won't back down/I won't turn around...doesn't matter what comes crashing down/I'm still gonna stand my solid ground."

Some vivid imagery used to describe emotional wreckage: "I woke up this morning to a blood red sky/they're burning on the bridge and turning off the lights...the water is rising on a river turning red," "I would take a bullet for you," "blood in the rain."

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Christian artist Mat Kearney uses lyrics that avoid explicit language, but offer sophisticated ideas and imagery that will make these songs most appealing to more mature tweens and teens. Although he's billed as a Christian artist, his religious talk is very subtle and can cross over to any faith.

What's the story?

A versatile artist who handles gentle pop, edgy rap, and power ballads with equal competence, Mat Kearney is primarily a storyteller -- skilled in getting his point across with a combination of vivid visual description, visceral emotion, and heady intelligence. Fans should know that nearly half of the material on NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE (his major-label debut) was previously released in 2004. But new fans will appreciate the depth and variety of the songs presented here, and some of the retreads sound freshly mixed.

Is it any good?

Nothing Left to Lose is an impressive collection of beautifully written songs performed with whole-hearted passion and smooth, poetic intensity. Although billed as a Christian artist, Kearney offers an inclusive, generous world view that will make his songs ring true to fans of any faith. Those looking for a little more Mat can find his music on the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack, Season 3.

A christin artist that really is outstanding.

I was first introduced to Mat Kearney at a Owl City concert. Owl City was on tour with Mat Kearney and Unwed Sailor. After the concert I realized how much I liked Mat Kearney. It's somewhat funny I saw him live before I knew how good he was. But let me just say, Mat Kearney sings great music with meaning and heart. I saw that and I am not kidding whatsoever. From songs like Hey Mama to Nothing Left to Lose, Mat Kearney does nearly everything thing right. Mat Kearney is a christian but his music really can apply to anyone. I don't think Mat Kearney tries to just target christians. I myself am a christian and I must say he is definitely a christian but the things he sings will apply to the older christian or just more of a teen or tween. Nothing is inappropriate but he states things like"Remember back when you slept on my floor Blow up mattress down by the door 10 pounds heavier from wasted time We didn’t know we were way out of line" Things like this can apply to anyone. That is why I love Mat Kearney. The music quality itself is also quite terrific. My all time favorite song by Mat Kearney would have to be Hey Mama. It is more of a fun song that is about love but it is quite terrific. You might not like Mat Kearney but I would suggest at least giving it a try.
