Educational value

Meant to entertain rather than educate.

Positive messages

While the song itself doesn't really have a strong message, the band maintains their clean-cut image while also raising money for charity.

Positive role models

One Direction recorded the single to raise money for Red Nose Day, a day created by the charity group Comic Relief to raise money for those in need in Africa and the U.K.

Violence & scariness

Sexy stuff

There's some very light innuendo with "I wanna hold you, wanna hold you tight." The video also shows one of the bandmates in the shower and the bathtub.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that the One Direction boys have covered Blondie's "One Way or Another," but have added a few twists of their own. The song and its silly video were created to raise money for Red Nose Day, an event sponsored by the charity Comic Relief. The song stays true to One Direction's usual clean and sweet style with no iffy language or violence and is appropriate for young tweens and teens.

What's the story?

Everyone's favorite boy band returns with a single recorded for charity. Parents will definitely recognize Blondie's '80s hit in "ONE WAY OR ANOTHER (TEENAGE KICKS)," and One Direction fans will get what they've come to expect from the U.K. group: A sweet and fun pop hit. The silly music video was recorded by the band while on tour, with the money saved also being donated to charity.

Is it any good?

If you're a fan of the Blondie version, you may be disappointed with One Direction's take on the song. While they've kept the unforgettable "I'm gonna getcha getcha getcha," they've played around with the lyrics and tune a little. It's also missing the edge that made Blondie's take so great. But the music video is a riot, as we've come to expect from the One Direction boys, and those unfamiliar with the original will no doubt appreciate the catchy tune.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the charity Comic Relief. Do you think recording songs for charity is a good way to raise money?

  • What's the difference between Blondie's version of the song and One Direction's? Which version do you like better?

  • Do you like the music video? Does it fit well with the song and the message of Red Nose Day?
