What parents need to know

Positive messages

This single touches on the compromise that's required for a good relationship -- "Girl you really changed my life, doin' things I never do / I'm in the kitchen cookin' things she likes" -- affording kids an honest picture of what being in a partnership really means.

Positive role models

Iyaz has hardly been on the scene long enough to prove whether he's role model material, but so far, his actions have been upstanding.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that like his good friend and fellow island-pop artist Sean Kingston, Iyaz keeps his lyrics clean: REPLAY is just a sweet single that revolves around a guy who falls head over heels for a special girl.

What's the story?

Virgin-Islands-born Iyaz is one of the latest artists to throw his hat into the ring of island-pop -- a new music genre that's catching on like wildfire. The singer was discovered on MySpace by fellow island popster Sean Kingston, who has since become good friends with Iyaz. Like several songs by Kingston, the debut single from Iyaz gives a clean account of finding (and keeping) the girl of his dreams. The lyrics contain nothing dubious, aside from an allusion to his girl being like a "gun in my holster" -- which is clearly a convenient if not ill-conceived rhyme with one of the previous lines ("That girl like something off a poster") rather than a suggestion of violence.

Is it any good?

REPLAY pairs the island-pop sound (reggae-esque hooks that are heavy on the synthesizer) with Iyaz's high vocal tones, which are somewhat reminiscent of another singer with dancehall flair -- Akon. The resulting mix tempts your feet toward the dance floor. In comparison, Sean Kingston's sound contains more of a contrast between the lofty synthesizer that characterizes island pop and the artist's deeper vocals.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the path Iyaz is taking. What lessons can other emerging artists learn from a newcomer like Iyaz, who's keeping his music clean yet still climbing up the charts?

  • What might a more established artist like Sean Kingston say to his friend Iyaz in order to help him along the path to stardom?
