What parents need to know

Parents need to know that "Rude" is a heartwarming, good-vibes summer jam about asking a girl's father for her hand in marriage, being denied his blessing, and running off to "marry her anyway." The tune is catchy, the lyrics are cute and clean, and the accompanying music video illustrates this story of persistent courtship.

What's the story?

RUDE is the debut single from Canadian rock/reggae-fusion outfit Magic!. The song is about a man asking his girlfriend's father for his daughter's hand in marriage, only to be rejected, leading singer Nasri to lament, "Why you gotta be so rude? Don't you know I'm human, too?" However, the denial doesn't seem to dissuade him, since he resolves "I'm gonna marry her anyway."

Is it any good?

The story is sweet and simple, the island vibes are infectious and well executed, and the hook is dangerously catchy. Fans of pop-rock, ska, and watered-down reggae will love the clean, crisp bounce of the guitars and steel drums, while lead singer Nasri's voice is warm and engaging. The lyrics aren't especially profound or poignant, but anyone who has ever felt the sting of a lover's disapproving family can relate to the time-tested trope.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the concept of seeking parental approval before marriage. In the modern age, should parents have the right or responsibility to dictate whom their children should or shouldn't choose as a life partner?

  • Every few years, there seems to be a reggae-infused pop hit, usually in the summertime. Why do you think there's always a market for this type of song, while reggae in general is more of a niche genre?
