Clean, emotional ballad about the challenges of love.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

The song shows someone making the emotionally mature choice to walk away from someone or a relationship that isn't working: "And I will swallow my pride / You're the one that I love / And I'm saying goodbye."

Positive role models

The ability to do the right thing, even if it hurts, is a trademark of a positive role model.

Not applicable

The song is about love but doesn't get physical at all. The video shows a couple lying on a bed partially undressed, but it's not sexual in any way.

Not applicable

The song was featured on the show So You Think You Can Dance without Aguilera and then on The Voice as a duet.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that pop duo A Great Big World and music veteran Christina Aguilera have paired up on the ballad "Say Something." The bittersweet tune and its accompanying video have no iffy language or references to drugs, alcohol, or sex, but the focus on the challenges of relationships makes it best for tweens and up.

What's the story?

New-to-the-scene pop duo A Great Big World re-recorded their single SAY SOMETHING with Christina Aguilera after she heard the song and loved it. The clean track -- which has been featured on multiple TV shows -- and its music video explore emotional vulnerability and show that sometimes you need to walk away from someone you love.

Is it any good?

Although "Say Something" would have been a very good song without the addition of Christina Aguilera, her understated but powerful vocals make this single great. It's a simple but heartbreaking track. The video feels a bit cliched, flashing between scenes of people in emotionally vulnerable situations and water droplets to symbolize their sorrow, but it still manages to tug on your heartstrings. It's a simple but powerful song that shows A Great Big World have a promising career ahead of them.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the theme of the song. Is it sometimes better to walk away from someone you love than stay in a situation that's not working?

  • A Great Big World originally recorded the song without Christina Aguilera. Do you think the song is better as a duet?

Great but tragic song!

It is a clean and beautiful song but could be upsetting for smaller kids as it talks about separation of friendship and losing someone close.
