Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that the Sparkle Soundtrack is mostly fine for kids, with a tiny bit of innuendo in one song being the only concern. The movie is the acting debut of American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, and the last movie and music recorded by the late Whitney Houston. The overall theme of the album is one of perseverance, faith, and celebration, not to mention a nice way to remember Houston in her final years.

What's the story?

The SPARKLE SOUNDTRACK features 11 tracks from the much-anticipated remake of the 1976 melodrama with original songs from Curtis Mayfield. The star-studded cast includes Jordin Sparks, Cee-Lo Green, and the late Whitney Houston, singing hits like "Running," "Something He Can Feel," "Celebrate," and Houston's moving rendition of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow."

Is it any good?

Whether it's the fact that this music was Houston's last, or that she plays the mother/mentor of the young, talented Jordin Sparks (who has hints of Houston's voice), the Sparkle soundtrack is inspiring, uplifting, and bittersweet. Cee-Lo Green adds a James Brown flavor with the song "I'm a Man," and Houston gives a seasoned but heartwarming rendition of the gospel song "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." Sparks shows she's got the sparkle with "One Wing" -- a song about praying to find help in fighting through the hard times. The songs of Sparkle are still as entertaining as they were in 1976 -- with messages of faith and love that ring true in any decade.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how events in actors' real lives affect the public's response to a movie. Do you think more people will see this movie because it is Whitney Houston's last before her death?

  • Doe the fact that Sparkle features some well-known actors and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks make you more inclined to see it? Would you still want to see it if it starred someone unknown?

  • How would you describe the music here? What makes it different from other music you listen to?
