"State of Grace" (CD Single)

Heartache strikes again in sweet yet somber Swift tune.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

While this is yet another Taylor Swift song about heartache over love lost, nothing about the messages here is overly positive or negative.

Positive role models

The song is about mourning the end of a romantic relationship; no real role model behaviors.

Not applicable

Just a hint of sexuality in the line "We are alone just you and me, up in your room."

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "State of Grace" is the latest in a long line of clean yet anguished singles by young singing superstar Taylor Swift. Once again, Swift forgoes any explicit language or content in the song, with nothing more than one faintly suggestive line ("We are alone just you and me, up in your room"). However, she heaps on the emotional melodrama about her broken heart: "I never saw you coming and I'll never be the same ... love is a ruthless game."

What's the story?

"STATE OF GRACE" is the fifth and final stand–alone single pre-released from Taylor Swift's full–length album Red. Like most of the singles that came before, this track covers very familiar territory for Swift –– feeling jilted by a boyfriend.

Is it any good?

"State of Grace" has a stronger pop sound than many of Swift's other country-infused singles -- a refreshing departure from her typical formula. While the arrangements are still simple and straightforward, the overall effect is another radio-friendly hit for Swift.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how so many of Taylor Swift's singles describe heartache –– and both the positive and negative repercussions this might have on her emotional well–being.

  • How do you feel when you listen to one sad song after another? Is there a balance between listening to sad songs as a way of releasing emotional tension and hearing too many?

  • Name three things you like to do to cheer yourself up when you're feeling down.

State of Grace

The song has a beautiful, yet sad sound. It focuses on what love is, why it doesn't work out, and two people hopelessly trying to hold onto it. Some of the lyrics can be iffy, including: "And all we know, is touch and go", "We are alone, just you and me, up in your room and our slates are clean" and "So you were never a saint and I’ve loved in shades of wrong." Overall, I love this song. The sound appeals to me, even with it's lyrics being melancholy.
