A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this music.

Educational Value

Meant to entertain rather than educate.

Positive Messages

It's all good vibes and teen romance, but the whole plot is about boys and girls chasing each other.

Positive Role Models & Representations

Idealized greasers and surfer stereotypes are all cheerful, optimistic, and non-threatening. Familiar themes of opposing the status quo and standing up for what is right.

Violence & Scariness

No real mentions of violence, save for a rockabilly tune called "Cruisin For a Bruisin'."

Sexy Stuff

Harmless teenage infatuation is in good taste; the lyrics don't contain anything Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, or anyone else would object to. Some may bristle at the repeated slang word "Betty" as a substitute for "girl."

Language

Disney keeps it clean, as per usual.

Consumerism
Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this original soundtrack to Disney Channel's Teen Beach Movie is a fun and family-friendly collection of old-school-style rock and roll, harkening back to the wholesome teenage beach party films of the 1960s. The lyrics are clean and the themes are light-hearted and romantic, making this a great choice for repeated listens and sing-a-longs.

What's the story?

TEEN BEACH MOVIE is the heir apparent to the High School Musical juggernaut, set on the beach in the 1960s. The soundtrack features the cast and a talented collection of studio musicians delivering original songs from the film in the style of vintage genres like surf rock, rockabilly, and pop ballads.

Is it any good?

While Teen Beach Movie may seem like a simple HSM knock-off combined with the style of Grease, the songs are surprisingly original and entertaining. The lyrics are solid throughout (with some inevitable cheesiness), the arrangements and production are excellent, and all the singing is fantastic. Mostly, what shines through is just how fun rock and roll can be when it's executed with talented young performers and smart lyrics. Fans of over-the-top, goofy, and cheesy show tunes will be pleased.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about soundtracks. What is the appeal? How do you think this soundtrack compares to High School Musical's?

  • Why do you think Disney chose to go back in time for this latest franchise? What is it about the 1960s that fascinates us so much?

  • Does this contemporary retro music sound "authentic" to you? Why or why not?
