What parents need to know

Positive messages

The song's messages are troubling: They revolve around performing selfish acts and extreme negativity toward women. For example: "I roll like a desperado, now I never know where I'm gonna go / Still I ball like there's no tomorrow until it's over and that's all she wrote."

Positive role models

No good role models to find in this song about people who do whatever they like without caring about  potential consequences.

Violence

Lots of dark, aggressive lyrics about women: "Before I tie a f---ing knot I'd tie you in one, bitch."

Sex

One of Eminem's verses gets pretty graphic about a casual sexual encounter.

Language

Some "N"-words, along with "f--k," "s--t," and "bitch."

Consumerism

Mentions "Air Yeezy" shoes.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this rap single contains some exceptionally dark messages about acting selfishly and violently, especially toward women. The tune also includes plenty of swearing and anger, making it an iffy choice for tweens and young teens.

What's the story?

Two of the most famous names in rap -- T.I. and Eminem -- collaborate in "THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE," a single that's largely an angry response to all the people (especially women) who've wronged them. The tune features its fair share of graphic language and aggressive references; for instance, "Dig, you ho /Take the shovel and dig you some dignity, bitch."It's not a healthy perspective for listeners of any age, let alone young kids.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Angry though they may be, both T.I. and Eminem clearly have talent. From the first note, this song's slow, stormy hook reaches out and grabs you. T.I.'s more subdued vocal delivery contrasts well with Eminem's more fiery performance, setting up this single to stick in your mind long after it's over. Too bad the message is a bad one for kids.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how the sound of a song can complement the meaning of its lyrics. What are some of the specific qualities about this song's sound that help draw out the dark meaning of its lyrics?

  • Can you think of any examples of songs in which the sound is upbeat but the lyrics are subdued -- or vice versa? What is the overall effect when that happens?

  • What do these lyrics say about violence toward women? Does a song like this promote violence?

EMINEM KILLED T.I.

On this song, Eminem spit the best verses. I still think it's beast!

Commonsense reviewed the leaked version. Here are the differences between the two versions.

They reviewed the old version. The differences between the 2 versions are; Eminem's 1st verse is different (Almost all of the things noted as iffy in Commonsense's review where from the original verse), the other difference is at the end of Eminem's second verse, the original version had the chorus start right after, on the new version T.I. has a mini verse after. The swearing is cut down quite a bit in the released version, so is the violence though there is some iffy content in Em's new verse with lines such as "So why would I buy you a gay a*s teddy bear b*tch your already bi-polar" But in contrast to the leaked version (which had a countless amount of F-bombs) the released version only contains 1 F-bomb in the whole song. There are some pretty explicit sexual references such as "I thought I told ya the spilled n*t ain't nothing to cry over". The overall message stays the same however and it is obviously not a good one. In terms of quality, the song delivers. The beat is solid, the chorus is solid, and the verses are solid.
