Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this up-and-coming boy band from across the Atlantic have already had teen girls swooning when they appeared on the U.K. version of the X Factor. Their breakout single sends a positive message about finding beauty in modesty and humility, rather than being swayed by one who flaunts her looks. And with clean lyrics and content, it's a good bet for most ages. The video features the too-cute quintet frolicking on a beach and singing to an unsuspecting natural beauty.

What's the story?

U.K. X Factor alums One Direction bring their cuteness to the U.S. with their breakout single "WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL." As the lead single from their debut album, Up All Night, the boys sing about true beauty. The video features the five guys running all around a pristine beach singing to an unassuming young lady.

Is it any good?

As if their perfectly floppy hairdos and sugary smiles weren't enough to reel you in, Brit boys One Direction also happen to like to sing about girls who don't realize they're beautiful. "You're insecure, don't know what for, turning heads when you walk through the door." The music is catchy and upbeat, and with its positive lyrics and message it's an ideal track for tweens to hear.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the theme of this song --"you don't know you're beautiful, that's what makes you beautiful." What do you think makes someone a true beauty? Do you think society feels the same way? What are some ways that media sends positive and negative images when it comes to beauty?

  • What are some ways that parents, relatives, and friends can encourage you to feel beautiful and special? How do you show those that you care about that you think they're beautiful?

Not as positive as other people think

I have to disagree with the "positive message" this song is sending. It still is only all about a girls looks rather than anything inherently about her personality or brains. It also is promoting low esteem. You are beautiful because you don't know you are beautiful? Wouldn't it be better if all adolescent girls knew they were beautiful? The girl the song is about is supposedly very attractive, since "everyone" can see, but doesn't seem to believe it. Is this really the message you want to send to your teen or pre-teen daughter?

It Rockz

This song so far is my second-best single of 2012. It's doing really well, I just love the song and it is just awesome. Nothing is bad with it, and it is positive and they are actually role models, so there it is.

An Honest Review From a Directioner!! :)

This is a really beautiful song. I heard this song and then heard the whole album. Their music is really different from anything I have ever heard. I own their album and play it in front of my 5 year old sister. My friends and I like this song and are currently obessed with them. If you like this song check out their album.
