A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this music.

Positive Messages

Nothing positive or negative, just some flirty, mildly sexy talk between adults.

Positive Role Models & Representations

No real role models; song is about finally finding the right person and wondering why it took so long.

A couple of semi-sexy lines: "I've been ... looking for someone who can please me / Love me all night long" and "You can have me all you want / Any way, any day."

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that "Where Have You Been" is one of Rihanna's cleaner tracks -- featuring few lyrics overall and only a couple of ambiguously steamy lines. With no other mature content or profanity, the tune is among the better choices for younger kids who love the R&B singer's music.

Cleaner Rihanna

Well as always it's a phenomenal Rihanna song. The song is about a girf finding the man of her life. In one of the lines she clearly explains that she want... Continue reading

Where have You been

As again, another great Rihanna song. And I gotta say, I've heard this song before it came on the radio! But, the picture for her "Talk that Talk... Continue reading

What's the story?

Talk That Talk, the sixth full-length album from R&B singing sensation Rihanna, has (so far) produced a remarkable five hit singles -- including "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN." Produced by big-name pop producers Dr. Luke and Calvin Harris, the track's lyrics are largely repetitive and mostly clean, revolving around a girl who finds the right guy and then poses the rhetorical question "Where have you been all my life?"

Is it any good?

Often compared to another danceable hit single, "We Found Love," from the same album, "Where Have You Been" has an infectious, dance-infused sound that makes it a shoo-in for club rotation. RiRi's strong vocal performance helps make the tune among the record's more memorable.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about how Rihanna's songs range from clean to extremely explicit. Who is her audience?

  • How do her tracks compare to music by peers, like typically clean Beyonce and super-graphic Nicki Minaj?

  • Do you think Rihanna's music is OK for kids? Why or why not?
