"Drive" movie review

"Drive" is a very polarizing movie. Upon its release, "Drive" was not well received by the movie-going audience. Many panned it. However, critics praised "Drive" as a masterpiece. I think that the hate the audience gave was due to false-marketing. The trailer showed this movie as a big action blockbuster. That's not what we got. We got a slow, arthouse film. That doesn't make "Drive" a terrible movie. If you ininitally hated the movie, please continue reading this review and see if you would like to give "Drive" another try. The movie is ultimately as Ryan Gosling said "a very violent John Hughes film". "Drive" is not meant to be an exciting action movie. The beginning is very well-directed and one of the best introductions ever in cinema history. Then the movie slowed down. The next hour and 30 minutes is called masterful film-making. The movie takes its time to show Ryan Gosling's character's progression from bad guy to a true hero. This is one of the best character studies of all time. Many hated Ryan Gosling's performance. I don't know why. The purpose of his character was to be a quiet guy with charisma. Ryan Gosling was acting through his face not through words and he does a great job with that. Carey Mulligan plays Ryan Gosling's love interest. She is a very important part to the movie and is the force that makes Ryan Gosling's character become a nicer and better person. Albert Brooks is a great villain and I like how devoted he was. He shaved his eyebrows to be more menacing. Brooks was an intimidating villian. What I loved the movie was the symbolism. There is a lot of them. Now I'm going to talk about what people wanted more of: the action. The action is brilliant. The driving sequences are amazing. The action is also very violent. The violence is really strong making this movie a movie for adults and not younger audience members. I love the action sequences, but I have not much to say about them. I have more to say about the characters and the story. The soundtrack to this movie fits perfectly, mostly of being a hero. "Drive" is a masterpiece filled with tension even without violence. This is easily one of my 20 favorite films for the masterful story-telling and symbolism. If you hated this movie, I hope you will check it out a second time and see more of the symbolism rather than looking for action. This is a modern masterpiece with a great performance from Ryan Gosling.

Landmark in Art-house Cinema

Winding Refn is a visual storyteller. This film is extremely carefully crafted to the point of flawlessness. Drive is a masterpiece, it's absolutely mesmerizing. Ryan Gosling is phenomenal, his performance is just amazing. This film is not only visually rich, it uses unique storytelling. Using symbolism and metaphor as a storytelling technique was perfect for this film. Drive is one of the greatest films of our time, it's unique, visually rich, carefully and flawlessly crafted, it has an enchanting soundtrack, it contains phenomenal acting, and and wonderful cinematography. This is one of my favorite films of all time. Although Drive is truly masterful, it's loaded with adult content such. This film is very very very graphically violent (not abundant with violence, but when it happens, it's very disturbing and shocking). There isn't a lot of sex, just one scene in which several women's breasts are visible. There is plenty of curse words, lot's of very coarse language throughout this entire film. Ryan Gosling's character can be describes as a "good role model." He does all in his power to protect a woman and her son from the criminals that are after him, doing everything in his power to become "a real hero" as the films theme song says. He want's to be a good person, trying to get himself out of the criminal underworld, trying to protect the woman he loves as well as her son. The main character is a good person. This film isn't for those seeking a popcorn flick, this is for those who like deeper meaning. Iffy for 15 and under.

scary and violent

There is no way that this film is suitable for kids. The only reason I watched it was becuase Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan star in it and I think they are very good actors. It's violent and scary for children. There was no nufity when I watched it, so maybe I saw a slightly different version. Mature teens might be able to handle it

A Driver without a Name

In Los Angeles, a mysterious driver (Ryan Gosling) is a man of few words that works as a garage mechanic for his only friend Shannon (Bryan Cranston); stuntman in Hollywood films; and driver of getaway car in heists. One day, he helps his neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), whose husband is in prison, and her son Benicio (Kaden Leos) and her falls in love with her. However, a few days later her husband Standard Gabriel (Oscar Isaac) is released from prison and they meet each other in the building. Standard is pressed by the criminal Cook (James Biberi) to rob a pawn shop to pay for the protection he had in prison, and the driver decides to help him driving the getaway car. However, the heist does not work as planned, Standard is murdered and the driver discovers that they have been double-crossed by Cook. Further, the money belongs to the Mafia and now he has to protect Irene and Benicio from the mobsters. "Drive" is a good thriller with the lead character without a name, recalling the style of Clint Eastwood in "High Plains Drifter" in the role of "The Stranger" – a man that speaks a few words only, violent when necessary that protects innocent and beloved people. The film is weirdly attractive with potential of cult movie. The stylish cinematography discloses in an adequate pace the big picture and develops characters very well. The conclusion has an open end, a characteristic that has been forgotten by Hollywood. My vote is eight.

Nicholas Winding Refn's brutal masterpiece.

Drive is an incredible movie all around. Fantastic plot, acting, and amazing cinematography. This arthouse film is, at least in my opinion, a masterpiece.

That being said, Drive is not a movie for anyone under 17. There is a dark tone surrounding the entire movie, one of crime and the life it leads. It doesn't glorify the life, but it shows a man who gets swept up in it. This isn't a movie about fast cars, it's a slow burning character study about a man who slowly loses himself to save someone he loves.

Violence. This movie is VERY graphically violent in a fully realistic way. Drive does not shy away from showing blood and gore, and certainly does not shy away from violent acts. However, it's not purposeless violence, there is a reason for everything in this movie.

As far as nudity goes, there is a scene that takes place in a sort of strip club backroom where you can see multiple topless women. However, during most of this scene the emphasis is on something else (due to spoilers I'll leave it as that) instead of these women.

There is quite a bit of language in Drive, but it never felt excessive.

To summarize; Drive is a masterfully made film, with stunning visuals and an awesome soundtrack. But with a mature premise and brutal violence, this is a movie you should hold out on showing younger audiences.

But seriously, watch Drive, it's amazing.

A really great movie that is also Very violent

It is very violent but it should be fine for kids who can handle violence and know its just a movie. The sex is pretty mild and there's swearing which I'm sure every kid either has heard it or used it. Mostly just a violent movie.

Great film.

Very well made, fairly slow, action thriller. Lots of profanity. Glorifies smoking and few but enough extreme moments of brutal bloody, violence. Okay plot, some nudity. But very entertaining! 10/10 recommend watching if you enjoy crime/racing movies.

A one of a kind film!

So first off i just wanna say that this movie is very weird but in a good way, for example sometimes or mostly all the time and throughout there are scenes where people stand still and dont blink or where there are long awkward moments of silence that last for seconds. The genre for this movie to me is weird and i dont know how to describe it and when i saw the trailer and heard of it on yt i had to see it asap. The acting is ok but again like i said it was weird and idk what so say about it. So some parts are bloody and its super cool, as well as the intro which is really cool and all the scenes with the car. The movies tone is also very static and dosent change throughout whatsoever. Also when the main character is going to or about to kill someone he looks and acts different because the whole movie he is chill and then his anger is out of control it looks like. Also another thing is all the songs that play which are like 3. All of them fit the movie and give it a futuristic robot neon feel at some times which is weird because it feels like a modern movie and its actually from 2011 and movies weren't this good back then well at least for some of them. This is a movie that you wont forget about after seeing it and will stick with you and make you wanna sit there for an hour and just think about it. The story and characters were ok and understandable but sometimes like i said it was weird from the camera angles to the lines to the little dialogue at some points, there are also some good actors here like the guy that played hellboy too. Overall alright and im glad i saw it when i did. Also sometimes it feels like a b movie even tho i dont think it is.

Great movie!

I would say this movie is action pact, yet the beginning starts off with no action at all. But once it gets into the action, it is brutal. Not only brutal, but can get very emotional too. What I think makes this movie so intense is because it starts off very slow and calm, then just gets right into it. I would definitely recommend this movie for any kids 14 and up!

3.5.4

Sex (3/5): A lengthy topless scene but, there are no close ups of the nudity.

Violence (5/5): Not frequent but, when it does happen the violence is extremely strong. Heads get blown off, a hitman's head is brutally stomped in and, several brutal stabbings.

Language (4/5): Lots of f words.

Parents should know "Drive" is a very mature film and, one that most teens probably will not be able to stomach.

Overrated crime drama has gory violence, Strong Language, and some nudity

Drive is a crime drama that is kinda boring to me. The pacing is horrible. It is a short movie, but overlong scenes of Ryan Gosling walking and staring at something is pretty boring after a while. There is a lot of gory violence, with blood. Gunfights, car chases, and more are in this. There is a scene where a couple woman are shown topless. There is a lot of language, with f*ck, sh*t, and more. Ron Perlman’s character says a lot of f*ck. The story was good but it could’ve been better. Overall, Drive is a boring crime film that has scenes that are way too overlong.

Excellent Crime Drama

Drive is an excellently made film with stunning cinematography, great performances and an engaging story and themes. However it is quite a strong film that I would only recommend for mature and older teens. The violence in the film is very strong and shocking but it is infrequent and serves a purpose to the story. There is also strong language in the film but nothing to be overly concerned about and very brief nudity that is none sexual. Because the violence is infrequent and often sudden it makes the violence far more shocking but if you feel prepared for it the film is certainly worth checking out. Highly recommended film but for mature teens only.

Amazing crime movie

This movie is very well made, acted and is very rewatchable . The plot is very well written and the characters are amazingly acted. However it is best for teens and up because of the brutal violence, strong language, and some nudity.

Absolutely beautiful arthouse action is not for the weak

To begin, I was absolutely blown away by this film. Gosling is fantastic as the unnamed protagonist, and the shiny visuals are pure art. Two words to describe Drive are: neon and beauty. I can’t even describe how amazing this movie is. Dialogue is present, but the real acting is through facial expressions, which expose lots of depth to be explored and thought about. On the parental guidance side, this movie isn’t for kids or those wanting a mushy action film. About half an hour in, the violence starts to get realistic and shockingly brutal (side note: the beginning of this film establishes the pure beauty and slow plot that it encompasses). The violence is not even present that often, but it really is in your face and very graphic. On the sexy side of things, one scene is particular is set in a strip club (breaths visible), but the focus is on something else. This movie included role models about the effects of crime and bad dedications, as well as emphasis on family and its strict importance. Beware of some strong language on the side as well. Overall, this is an important piece of arthouse cinema that should be appreciated by age groups able to appreciate it. 10/10, 15+.

Mature, brutal, and thought provoking - not for the average moviegoer

Since they're red herrings to my argument, I'm not going to bring up the stupid arguments that say this movie sucks because it's too violent or has excessive nudity (never mind that the scene is set in a Strip Club). For the rest of us that are mature enough to withstand both, Drive is one of the most mature films to have come out in the early 2010s'. The characters are deep, the story is simple but sweet, the acting is blissful, the writing and dialog are thought provoking, and the cinematography is excellent - especially considering Refn is colorblind (watch some interviews if you don't believe me). Despite the above, Drive is not for everyone. If you're going into expecting a guilty-pleasure/mindlessly-enjoyable action film, you're going to be sorely disappointed. Drive is, without a doubt, an Arthouse film that takes elements from the Neo-Noir and Action genres respectively. If you don't know what an Arthouse film is, they're basically artsy independent films that hold deep meanings behind dialog and visuals - at least, going by the Arthouse films I've seen, that what it seems like. Drive is a very mature film, and while I disagree with having to recommend an age group (parents should deduct whether or not their children should see movies based on the content and the maturity of the child mixed together. Giving age recommendations is not a bad idea, but they can be too harsh considering how tame the content can be to some who are mature enough), it's not something you should be showing your 7-y/o kid(s). Time to look over the content! Violence: 5/5. A few scenes (not allot) depict very graphic violence, though it's quickly cut; shootings with blood spraying; graphic stabbings with some variety in objects; a face is kicked in off-screen, and more. Language: 3.5/5. The F Bomb, A-Hole, The P-Bomb, and quite a few others are dropped. Not too much cussing, but it's still there. Sex/Nudity: 3.5/5. There's a scene in a strip club where nudity can clearly be seen in the background. Though it isn't the main focus of the scene, and is shot in a way that tries to distract from it, it's still there. The scene goes on quite some time, but isn't extensively long. Drugs/Alcohol/Smoking: 2.5/5. Not a big deal at all. Some characters are seen smoking/drinking. Drugs are referenced as part of the plot, but not in graphic/excessive in detail. Again, I'd like to restate that Drive is a very mature film, and clearly not for the faint of heart.

Incredibly Violent with an Important Story

This film isn't an action film this isn't a car film. This is a story driven movie for a thoughtful mature audience. This is film shows extremely violent deaths in a deeply disturbing and realistic way. This is all for the good of story telling however it's still violence that is used to shock viewers. It a film that defiantly needs a discussion after watching.

Very Bloody

Let me start out by saying that this is a superb movie, the music is excellent, the acting and the plot. Furthermore, Ryan Gosling really comes out from under his Romantic movie leads in this startling drama. I don't have any problems with this movie itself but the violence is an issue for anyone under 16. The problem with the violence in this movie is that it happens so quickly you don't have time to skip it. The beginning of the movie is fairly tame until about half way through when a woman's head is blown off by a shotgun. It is the bloodiest thing that I have seen in a while and shocked me a lot. Her head literally exploded and you are shown the bits and pieces of it sprayed al over a miror. This event is so sudden that you are not prepared for it, there is no rising action or thematic music to suggest that something violent is going to happen. If you are O.K with your child seeing scenes like that one then by all means, show them Drive because the rest of the movie is tame compared to that scene. I just think that its stupid to say that this movie is all right for teens 14 and up, please parents, use your judgement!
