How do I keep my kid on "safe sites"?

Kids can go online from so many sources, including video game consoles, iPhones and smartphones, and handheld gaming devices such as Nintendo's DS, that it's increasingly difficult to ensure they're always on age-appropriate sites. Setting the content filters on your Web browsers will limit access to some age-inappropriate sites when kids are using the computer, but it's tough to prevent it entirely.

Spending your life policing your kid's online activities and supervising every moment will wear you out. Raising kids to think critically about the media they are using will help establish healthy lifelong habits instead of the need to ask permission for every decision. That's why empowering kids to find appropriate sites and avoid the rest can be your best bet. Consider spending some time together online, visiting their favorite sites and talking together about what you both like and don't like. Explain that there are sites that are for grown-ups and that you'd like them to avoid those until they're older. But let them know that it's normal to be curious about grown-up stuff, and you're open to talking about what they come across online.

Keeping the lines of communication open when kids are younger will make your life a lot easier when they start exploring these technologies more independently.

Try a web blocker like Net Nanny or K9 Web Protection. You can stop kids from going on websites that you don't want them on.

You shouldn't stalk your kids on the computer. It could really creep them out and annoy them. If you don't want to scare your kids, put on parental controls or block innapropriate sites. Just don't block YouTube your kids wanna watch stuff. So just don't be sitting there stalking your kid(s) on the computer. It doesn't really seem nice to me.

Monster them while they are playing. The only way to prevent unsafe and inappropriate sites that your children are on, is to watch them, yes, literally sit and watch what they're doing. Cause otherwise, there's no promise they won't get on websites they shouldn't be on.
