Can young kids benefit from connecting with others online?

Yes. The world in which your kids will be working, socializing, learning, and playing will include online interaction. Early experience will maximize their ability to use the Internet productively. The more involved you are -- especially as they're acclimating and learning the rules of the online environment -- the better off they'll be.

You can help by training your kid to recognize that there are real people on the other end of the screen. Look for games and social sites that emphasize interactive opportunities to learn these skills:

  • Playing cooperatively
  • Recognizing emotions
  • Taking turns
  • Losing gracefully
  • Accepting differences
  • Taking no for an answer
  • Giving -- and getting -- honest feedback
