What's the Story?
The unscripted series FIX MY CHOIR features gospel celeb and Preachers of L.A. star Deitrick Haddon and Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams as they travel across the country transforming choirs in hopes of transforming people's lives. From New Orleans to Hermosa Beach, California, they spend five days with choirs that are suffering from sour notes and a lack of harmony. While there, they work out vocal issues, interpersonal conflicts, and leadership problems. At the end of each visit, the choir they're mentoring gives a public concert demonstrating how they can come together and put on inspiring performances. It's not always easy, but the duo uses honesty and positive reinforcement to help each choir make music happen.
Is It Any Good?
Haddon and Wiliams work with groups of singers that are well-intentioned and truly committed but have somehow lost their way as a team. They also help choirs find the confidence to be spiritually powerful and entertaining.
Not surprisingly, there are a lot of references to God, Christianity, and prayer, either through song or during personal exchanges. But the messages about working together, honoring their craft, and using music as a constructive way of facing difficult challenges rise above any specific religious beliefs. The actual performances are often very good, too. It may not be for everyone, but those who tune in will enjoy lots of positive energy.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the history of gospel music. Did you know anything about its roots? What other genres of music are influenced by gospel music? What's the difference between Southern gospel and urban contemporary gospel? Did you know that popular singers such as the late Whitney Houston, R. Kelly, and Katy Perry got their start by singing in gospel choirs?
Why would people want to appear on a reality show? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
