What's the Story?
HIDDEN RUSSIA is a nature documentary spanning an eye-catching and varied expanse of terrain, from the snowy arctic to the dry and arid plains. We meet the animals who are native to each ecosystem -- some of whom are rarely filmed or are endangered -- and learn about how Russia's landscape has changed over millions of years.
Is It Any Good?
Full of lovely nature footage and unexpected facts about the country and its landscape, this documentary succeeds in highlighting a lesser-seen side of Russia. As the largest country in the world -- Russia spans 17 million square kilometers, roughly 4 times the size of the U.S. -- it stands to reason that there is a greater variety of ecosystems and scenery than you might think. Indeed, Hidden Russia goes beyond stereotypes of unforgiving frozen tundras, treating viewers to expansive views of active volcanoes, lush forests, and all manner of animal life. Audiences learn about the geography of Russia and the way it's changed over millions of years while watching bucolic pastoral scenes full of creatures like wild deer, graceful swans, rare water moles, and majestic musk oxen. There are a few scenes where predator animals chow down on dead whale flesh or freshly caught salmon, which may serve as a useful science lesson or an upsetting moment depending on the sensitivity of a young viewer. Overall, though, this is a gentle film packed with fascinating displays of natural life that families should enjoy watching together.
