I'm Married to a...

Edgy series with unconventional couples, sexual focus.

What parents need to know

Positive messages

The series highlights how couples make their relationships work through unconventional situations, as well as the importance of being open to people who are different. The misconceptions and/or stigmas associated with who their spouses are, their activities, and/or their beliefs are also discussed. The voyeurism inherent in this show sends a bit of a mixed message about tolerance.

Positive role models

The couples featured appear committed to one another, and are accepting of one another's differences. Folks sometimes lie about what spouses and/or how they think out of shame, guilt, and/or fear of being judged and rejected.

The tensions that arise as a result of the differences between couples are discussed, but not in great detail. Contains references to owning guns, but not in a violent context.

Spouses are male porn stars, cross-dressers, sexologists, and work at and/or engage in sex-related activities. Contains scenes showing cross-dressing, BDSM activities, homosexuality, and polyamorous relationships. People are showed in their underwear or in skimpy outfits; nudity is blocked out.

Words like "crap" are audible; words like "d--k," "s--t," and "f--k" are bleeped.

References are made to Playgirl. Canon cameras are visible; various products like Coca-Cola beverages are visible, but the logos are not shown.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Alcohol consumption (mostly wine) is occasionally visible over meals and during social gatherings.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that I'm Married to a… features lots of adult-oriented discussions about relationships and marriage that aren't really meant for kids. There's lots of focus on sex and gender-related activities (like pornography and cross-dressing, etc.), and the discussions about these activities contain strong sexual references and occasional images of folks in various stages of undress (with nudity blacked out). Some episodes contain lots of bleeped curses and show family disagreements. Throughout it all, the importance of being open to people who are different is underscored.

What's the story?

I'M MARRIED TO A… is a docuseries that features married couples working through situations that seem unconventional and/or strange thanks to a spouse's physical, mental, and/or professional situation. From a straight husband who works as a gay porn star to average-sized people marrying folks who are little or large, each couple reveals the history behind their romance, as well as the challenges posed by their unique circumstances. It isn't always easy, but somehow each couple finds a way to make their relationship work.

Is it any good?

I'm Married to a... features a wide-variety of couples who have found happiness with each other, but who must work through challenges posed by the differences that exist between them. While some couples try to find ways to live mainstream lives despite a spouse's physical limitations and/or disabilities, others must contend with the preconceptions and social disapproval surrounding the their partner's behavior or beliefs. They must also negotiate the disapproval and moral judgments imposed on them by friends and family who are unwilling to accept their unconventional ways.

The wide range of intimate scenes shown here, along with the moments in which couples reveal their secrets to loved ones, creates lots of titillatingly voyeuristic moments that will appeal to reality fans. But not everyone will be comfortable with some of behaviors featured here, or a spouse's willingness to accept them. Nonetheless, the show demonstrates how some folks are able to find love and happiness with someone thanks to their ability to open their minds and their hearts to individuals who are considered different from the mainstream.
