What parents need to know

Positive messages

It's meant to be lighthearted and funny, but pranks and/or commentary sometimes seem mean-spirited.

Positive role models

During the gags, comedians often act crazy or mean-spirited, but it's not real.

Angry prank victims occasionally push, shove, hurl insults, and threaten, and they're not joking.

Sexually provocative dancing is visible; in one episode a woman's partial butt is shown.

Words such as "bitch" and "ass" audible; curses bleeped. A regular segement is called the "Jerk Off."

Not applicable
Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Cigarette smoking is sometimes visible; one prank includes giving a cigarette to a (fake) baby.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Jerks with Cameras features comedians playing pranks on random strangers and showing the footage to a studio audience. There are lots of funny moments, but they come with a fair share of strong language ("ass," "bitch"), some pushing and shoving, and some cigarette smoking. There's also occasional butt-shaking and references to twerking. Older tweens might be drawn to it, but it's better-suited for teens.

What's the story?

MTV's JERKS WITH CAMERAS is a prank show featuring a team of eight comedians playing jokes on unsuspecting people. Hosted by Tone Bell, the comedians, aka \"The Jerks,\" take to the streets to ambush strangers in hopes of eliciting big reactions and capturing them on-camera. From dressing like a waitress and accusing random strangers of not paying their bills, to holding an elevator door open so long as they can before passengers completely lose it, the comedians do their best to create some wacky moments. Once back in the studio, they take a look at the funniest moments and share them with a studio audience. Each episode ends with the \"Jerk Off,\" which shows each Jerk executing the same prank in hopes of winning the coveted title of \"Jerk of the Week.\"

Is it any good?

The lighthearted series features some talented improv artists who must think quickly while out on the streets to keep the running gags going. Meanwhile, they must also fearlessly stay in character despite the shocked reactions and occasional backlash from the people they're playing jokes on.

Most of the pranks are funny, and as a result you can't help chuckle at the double takes from stunned victims. However, on occasion, some of the in-studio commentary goes from being witty to being borderline insulting. But, if you're looking for some solid improv entertainment, this will fit the bill.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about pranks and practical jokes. What is the purpose of playing jokes on people? Is it to generate a laugh? To poke fun at a person? When does a prank go from being funny to being mean?
