What's the Story?
Produced by Oprah Winfrey, LINDSAY is a reality series featuring actress Lindsay Lohan as she attempts to rebuild her personal life and professional career. After completing a final court-ordered 90-day stint in rehab, the troubled actress relocates from California to New York in hopes of starting over while being closer to her family. Helping her through the transition is Michael Cormier, her sobriety coach from the Cliffside Malibu rehab center, and Matt Harrell, her personal assistant. From coping with the challenge of trying to find an apartment in Manhattan to keeping herself out of situations that can trigger destructive behavior, Lohan struggles to keep her private life in balance while trying to succeed in the very public and unforgiving entertainment industry.
Is It Any Good?
Lindsay invites viewers to try to understand the many challenges the eponymous actress faces while attempting to overcome a well-publicized decade of personal and legal problems from her point of view. It also shows some of the unique challenges her public persona creates as she learns to live a sober life, including not being able to attend AA meetings due to aggressive paparazzi and trying to maintain a clear sense of who she is and what she needs to remain sober in an industry that celebrates illusion and excess.
The series paints a picture of a difficult journey, and there are moments when one can appreciate the struggle Lohan is going through. There also are many times when she comes across as difficult, irresponsible, and entitled, which lead to some teachable moments with Oprah, who clearly views the series as a chance to relaunch the former child actress' career. Family drama, especially surrounding her notorious stage mother Dina, also make viewers wonder about some of Lohan's choices. But regardless of whether you're a Lohan fan or not, her story certainly makes for some voyeuristically entertainment.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about reality shows. Why do you think Lindsay Lohan agreed to appear on a reality series that makes her personal life more public? Is it the money? The publicity? Sympathy? Does this show present her in a favorable light?
What do you imagine are Oprah's motivations for producing this show? What, if anything, can we learn from watching Lindsay's struggles?
