awesome!

Kissing between teenagers and their significant others, but nothing more. While not explicitly educational, kids might pick up on a few things about jazz or the civil rights era, plus great social lessons. Strong families, the importance of positive communication, the value of quality time spent with kids, taking responsibility for your actions, being proud of who you are, treating people fairly, etc.

Caution

though in general this show seems fine. I think that you should sit down and watch it with your kids. What may be appropriate for some kids at a certain age may not be for another. There is an episode I just watched recently where Vanessa plays a drinking game with her girlfriends.

one of the best shows ever made

Bill Cosby knew exactly what he was doing. Although it's more common to see black people in professional jobs on tv now than it used to be, when this show premiered in 1984 this was rare. As for family shows about black families, this was one of the first such shows, and probably the first, to show the parents in upper-middle class jobs. While there are occasional episodes about the civil rights movement and other issues of importance to blacks, as well as occasional displays of African art and the like- all of which provide great insight and a potential springboard for viewers to find out more- most episodes are about things that can happen to any kid or family of any race, ensuring the show's extremely broad appeal. Cliff and Clair are calm with their children- most of the time anyway- and instill in them such values as hard work and honesty. There even were a few episodes where Bill Cosby's creative approach to education was seen. And, while Cliff and Clair introduce their children to jazz, they also let them listen to "their own" music. In other words, they know where to draw the line. The only honest criticism that can be made- if indeed any can be made- is the parents' attitude toward working class jobs. On one hand, whenever such characters appear on the show, they're portrayed in a positive light. On the other hand, the parents talk their children out of such jobs. This inconsistency makes it hard to tell what the parents- and Bill Cosby and the show's producers- think about such people and such jobs. A bit of inconsistency here. Still, that's just one small problem in a great show. Children ought to discover this show.

Great Show!

This is a great show for families! There are a FEW sexual refferences, but overall it's wonderful seeing Cliff Huxtable teach his children how to be good people throughout the series.

Still the greatest

Awesome show! No language at all (not even God's name in vain, which is a big relief). The only thing I have against it is that the wife likes to control her husband a lot (she doesn't let him eat certain foods when she's around, and he hardly ever takes charge, and says, "I'm the dad. What I say goes." And there's an episode where the daughter and her friend are fighting about a woman doing what a man says, but they're only, like, 6 or 7). Other than that, it's got good moral lessons, and it's entertaining. I would recommend it :)

amazing show! just amazing!

The Cosby Show is by far my favorite classic TV show starring an almost-entirely black ensemble (Lisa Bonet, Geoffrey Owens, etc.) with good life lessons behind its back. Although it may not do very educational need (except for learning to cope with angst and such), there is more than a boatload of life lessons that work well even when you expect the show to be an all-out uproar. There are a lot of role models in the show that really appeal to all ages. Some weak violence, as far as I saw, a hole broken in the house ceiling, Cosby reporting a door hanging from a hinge and a splintered table, as well as an accidental slip causing a vase and such to drop. Some sexual matter that will slip over the heads of youngsters pretty easily, such as light kissing. (and that's how far it goes) Vanessa does say "shut up" once in an episode, and she does reference her possession of a Bobby Brown tape that Rudy stole. One episode actually shows Vanessa and Rudy learning French, which can allow kids to learn it, too. This show is a must-own, either on DVD, or available for Netflix owners. If you've turned away from this show, you're making a big mistake.

The Cosby Show Review

One of NBC's most proudest accomplishments. The Cosby Show takes it time to be very funny, while still having time for romance, positive messages, and vice versa. Bill Cosby has the perfect "family" while serving a "perfect" role, and this show must be one of his biggest successes on the line of his acting career. Although the show does get a little juggle balancing new cast members coming and going, it's still a show kids would love to watch.
