What's the story?

TOGETHER WE RISE: THE UNCOMPROMISED STORY OF GRM DAILY tells the story of the GRM Daily website and YouTube channel, and how it facilitated the rise of grime music in Britain. Grime, a style of British rap music, grew out of the dance music scene in the early 2000s when rappers started putting lyrics over a genre of club music called garage. When entrepreneurs Koby "Posty" Hagan and Pierre Godson-Amamoo, along with designer Matt "Sketchy" Thorne, realized there was no real platform for Black artists in England, they created one that quickly became a massively popular home for grime artists and their audience.

Is it any good?

Grime is an extremely popular genre in Britain, but doesn't have a huge audience in the United States. Together We Rise relies on some prior knowledge of the music (not to mention the willingness to decipher the thick regional accents), but it rewards fans with an energetic and insightful look into the business side of artistry.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about grime. What is grime music? How did it come to be? What makes it unique? Were you familar with grime before watching this series?

  • Why did grime need a platform like GRM Daily to reach an audience? How was that platform created? What was unique about it? How did it get to be so popular?

  • What are some of the challenges Posty and his staff faced while launching and running GRM Daily? How did they meet these challenges? What skills does Posty have as an entrepreneur? How did they help him along the way?
